I gave it 2 stars cuz it had GREAT service. Nice people there. +I hate to give anyone a bad review, but i really don't like food that has an over-abundance of sugar in it. It is such a tease when you are hungry, and the food is good in some ways but then simultaneously way too sweet at the same time. If u r a trendy sugaraholic than this place would be for you. The plain buttermilk pancakes are WAY too sugary. I miss the Diner that recently closed down in Chevy Chase. (THEY had great pancakes that did not taste like candyland.) Another problem with "Open City" was the price (for pancakes at least) compared to the Chevy Chase Diner was quite steep. You will be throwing down some serious cash to abuse your spleen +pancreas.. / To cap it off i got a response from the owner(written below this) saying they don't serve buttermilk pancakes! I was gonna go to another diner (certainly wish i had) but i spent extra $ on the subway and WAY too much time, to make the trek down to Open City instead because when I called them I asked specifically if they had BUTTERMILK pancakes and they said YES! Then when i arrived I asked again if they had buttermilk pancakes, and again the waiter said "yes", so i ordered buttermilk pancakes.. In summary, if they could hire people who comprehend word meanings and know what's on their own menu, that would be a good start. No wonder it tasted as bad as it did. I want my money back! I wish I'd payed with a credit card because if i had i would have cancelled my payment, and even then, I'd still feel like they owed me something for wasting my TIME! Not only did they feed me something other than what they told me they were serving me, worse yet, they trashed my spleen +wasted my time! If U R a de-sensitized sugar-addicted vegan, with money to burn, this might be the perfect place for u, on the other hand if ur a person who is not interested in inducing hypoglycemia or diabetes, I strongly suggest u look for...
Read moreExtremely disappointing experience at one of my favorite coffee shops! My friend ordered a smoothie with the cashier and the employee behind the counter didn't want to make it. The cashier proceeded to make it for him after he complained. I went to put my bag down and 5 minutes later my friend came back to order my smoothie since his was so good. The male employmee with glasses had put the smoothie machine in the back room and cleared out the fridge of the smoothie ingredients. My friend tried to order the exact same drink but he lied and said the machine was broken. Seeing he had moved the smoothie machine, i tried to go up and order the same drink. This time he lied and said they had no more bananas. I accused him of lying, and asked if i could have the mango smoothie. I guess he folded once accused because he proceed to make a mango smoothie after retreiving the WORKING machine from the back. I don't understand the reason for the lies other than laziness :( definitely just lost a...
Read moreWith the original in Woodley Park, this location is Open City's second. Located inside a historic building on the grounds of the National Cathedral, here's my experience after visiting on a Monday morning:
Food: My five-year-old daughter and I stopped in for a snack after playing at the nearby Beauvoir Playground. She ordered a plain bagel with plain cream cheese and devoured it! My cinnamon swirl sweet bread was great!
Drinks: Their chair latte is still among my favorite in D.C. (Ebenezers near Union Station also has a great chai latte.)
Service: It's quick and very kind. One gentleman was so funny and served every customer with class, grace, and speed.
Space: There are many tables inside the historic space with stain-glass windows. There's outdoor seating in the patio. There's free wifi throughout.
Neighborhood: There's a lot to explore nearby, including the Bishop's Garden, Olmsted Wood, and Beauvoir Playground (when it's open to...
