Spirit Cafe — Restaurant in Waterbury

This place has fallen off so hard. I used to like it. I left a good review initially about a year ago, and since then, most things have decreased pretty significantly in quality. I feel bad writing this review because the front staff is kind, but after multiple awful orders I have to warn other people.

The problems:

-the prices for the portions you get. Portions are far too small.

-the actual food quality is not that good. The best thing about the food here is the bread. The bread is often very fresh and soft. But other than that, the actual food quality isn’t good.

-too inconsistent. I order from here often simply because of convenience. It is hard to find food near my job early in the morning, this place offers that. But if I order the same thing every morning for a week, it will come out noticeably different 3 out of the 5 times I order it. I’m talking big differences too. A sandwich that normally has breaded chicken will suddenly have grilled rubbery chicken. A sandwich will come with half the fillings than normal. If the sandwich has a sauce, sometimes they’ll barely put any on, and this is regardless if you request extra or none. It’s almost as if they take your requests as simply that, a request that they can just choose to deny whenever they aren’t feeling up to it. If you ask for double meat, you might get it, if they feel like it. It sounds harsh but I’ve been so patient with this place, and this review is after hundreds of dollars worth of food over the course of a year. I do not like to complain, and I will eat the food regardless most of the time, but honestly this sort of inconsistency is unacceptable. Whether it’s due to different staff in the kitchen, or incompetent kitchen staff, I do not know, but it’s very unfortunate regardless.

The good:

-the coffee is usually good and the prices are fair -the front staff is very friendly -they open early

If they fix the issues going on in the kitchen, this place would really be so much better, but until then I cannot not...

This place is awesome! Went here with a group of friends this past Sunday. It was our first time and everyone loved it.

I'm not a coffee drinker, but the Spirit Spice Latte was on point.

I got the French toast with strawberries and whipped cream on the side. It was really good and the whipped cream is nice and thick.

Friends had the Omelet, Trifecta sandwich and BLT sandwich. Everyone enjoyed what they ordered.

I'm so excited to find this place because the food is good and very affordable! It'll be my new go-to-spot!

UPDATE as of 06/01/2023:

This place is da bomb! Look how big the Greek salad is with chicken and the beef Empanadas!!! Everything tasted so good. Empanadas were perfectly cooked and flavorful and huge. Everything tasted so fresh even with a delivery. You definitely get your money's worth here. Going to start eating here more often. The people who cook here...

I just moved here to CT from NYC this September and came across this gem of a coffee shop. Definitely gives me a taste of home every time I come in. Coffee is brewed to perfection, amazing assortment of pastries from Spanish to American culture. Staff is exceptional, warm and very inviting. Extremely spacious, whether you’d like to hold a conference, a small business meeting, or just have a coffee date. There is more than enough space. Management is delightful and make great conversation! Location is amazing there isn’t another coffee shop for miles! This was a great addition to downtown Waterbury and I can’t wait until my next visit! Iced lattes, lightly toasted everything croissants, and spinach bagels are favorite! Definitely come in and try for yourself! Wishing spirit cafe all the luck on any future endeavors. Thank you!
