What a DISAPPOINTMENT. I am not sure how this place got so many good reviews but it did not live up to the expectations I had going in. First off, my wife and I arrived at 1:40 on a Sunday afternoon. I ask the waitress several questions about the broth of the ramen and what the difference was between them and she could not answer any of my questions. She insisted on rushing us to get our order in after we said we wanted more time with the menu twice (which I found out why after we ordered). At the time, we were the only table in the restaurant. We ordered two ramen bowls, which I ordered the Miso because it did not state that it had bamboo in it and my wife had the Shoyu. In addition, we ordered three sushi rolls and the seaweed salad. While waiting for our food, my wife noticed there was a happy hour menu on the table that starts at 2:00. I looked at the time and it was 1:57, our ramen arrived at 2:04 and we asked if we were going to get the happy hour price for the items we ordered. The waitress said she would ask her manager and let us know. She returned with the sushi at 2:08 and asked if we needed anything else. My wife said, so what did the manager say, the waitress told us that the manager said no, we will not get the happy hour prices. Ah, now I know why we were rushed to order, she had to get it in before happy hour. I told the waitress that we will NEVER be back and that she should have informed us about the happy hour. Is it that big of a deal, no, but it is the principle. I felt ripped off now and asked for to go containers because we did not want to stay there any longer. We packaged our food and left. No manager interaction, they just let us leave knowing that we will never come back. Now to the food, we returned home to eat. The ramen was mediocre, the pork belly was a little tough, the noodles were hard, and of course the miso had bamboo in it. My wife put one slice of a sushi roll in her mouth and realized she was chewing on a bone the size of the end of my finger (see picture). DISGUSTING, the thing was so big it could have stabbed in her flesh, that was the last straw; it all went in the trash as that is about all their food is good for. I hope that all these people who gave great reviews the first time update their reviews now the place has been open longer. Due to poor/lack of management, subpar food, and clueless wait staff, we will...
Read morePhenomenal. I cannot oversell Ohana. Both the food and service quality were fantastic.
I feel it's important to note that as far as I am aware, this is the ONLY place in Waxahachie (not to mention all of Ellis county) to get authentic ramen, and actually the only place within approximately 30 miles/40 minutes, with the next closest locations being in either downtown Dallas or south Arlington.
Considering the above, I had to try the tonkatsu ramen with chashu (pork belly) and an order of fried pork gyoza. Probably some of the best ramen I've ever had. The chashu was almost the best pork I've ever had period. The gyoza was perfectly fried - lightly crispy on the outside without being overdone or hard/chewy, and the accompanying sauce was excellent. Presentation was very well done as well.
Service was, if anything, almost over-attentive, which is to be expected in the early opening weeks of any good restaurant, and certainly preferable to the opposite. The owner (Danny) was going table to table chatting with all the customers, inquiring how the food was, and was extremely affable. I overheard several other customers remarking on how good their meals were, and how they couldn't wait to return and try something else from the menu.
For anyone local to the area, you'll recognize the location as previously belonging to a Chinese/Thai restaurant named "Golden Spice" and before that, for many years, a catfish restaurant which was styled after the "Bonanza" steak houses popular in the 70's and 80's. The new owners have done a fantastic job with the interior decorating - literally night and day compared to what it used to be. The ambiance is very warm/cozy, while maintaining a modern flair.
My only concern for Ohana is that it's somewhat tricky to get to unless you know the area. Once you see it from the highway or while exiting, you can't get to it without looping under the highway at the 77 light, and then again at Solon road, and then returning up the service road, or taking a detour through a few suburban side streets (Mark Tr and Houston St). Hopefully this won't cost them too many customers, and if they can maintain their current levels of quality in food and service (always a challenge for new restaurants) word of mouth will certainly spread, and I think they could easily become a culinary hidden gem for...
Read moreMy wife recently celebrated her 40th birthday at Ohana - Sushi, Ramen, and Poke, and it was an absolutely unforgettable experience! From the moment we walked through the door, we were greeted with warm hospitality and a vibrant atmosphere that set the perfect tone for the evening.
The staff at Ohana went above and beyond to make sure that every detail of the celebration was just right. They worked closely with us to create a personalized experience for our group of closest friends, ensuring that my wife's milestone birthday was truly special.
The highlight of the evening was undoubtedly the delicious food. Ohana's menu boasts a fantastic selection of sushi, ramen, and poke bowls, each dish bursting with flavor and expertly prepared. Our group enjoyed sampling a variety of dishes, from the fresh and flavorful sushi rolls to the comforting and aromatic ramen bowls.
But the standout dish of the evening was the green tea tiramisu. It was an absolute masterpiece, perfectly balancing the delicate flavors of green tea with the rich creaminess of traditional tiramisu. Each bite was a taste sensation, and it quickly became the talk of the table.
In addition to the fantastic food, the service at Ohana was impeccable. The staff was attentive, friendly, and went out of their way to ensure that our party had everything we needed throughout the evening. Their attention to detail and commitment to excellence truly made the celebration memorable.
Overall, I cannot recommend Ohana - Sushi, Ramen, and Poke highly enough for special occasions and celebrations. Whether you're looking to host a birthday party, anniversary celebration, or any other milestone event, Ohana is the perfect choice. Thank you to the entire team at Ohana for making my wife's 40th birthday celebration one for the books! We'll definitely...
