I went here for the sake of nostalgia, and because my 8yo said he had not been there in years. We decided to visit to remember what we were missing by going to Scottos, Christian's, and Crozet Pizza.
We remember now: See also photos. The food is indulgent, a comfort package in large portions. Sadly, it's just not that good. The pizza, most notably pan pizza here, makes Chicago style butter pies seem sensible. The crust is so thick there is an option on the menu for half the dough portion. The oil is used here as a condiment, but not at the table, and not quality oil.
Every slice grab is met with wet opposition. Every bite is accompanied with a sudden slick on the teeth that you get when you eat too many fries. The sauce is zesty, but there's nothing like tomato flavor anywhere near it. The cheese is sauce-like, melted for the effect of umami, but there's not a lot of cheese flavor left. It's like cheap gravy. I often use American cheese slices in stews for the same effect.
In our case, we got a specialty pie that sounded interesting, a Hawaiian pie with pineapple, ham and bacon. It sounded delicious, and I love Hawaiian style. Unfortunately, the pineapple was canned, the ham was deli, and the bacon was anything but crisp. Independent shops in the area, like Scotto's, alternatively, use real carved ham and has a tasty, authentic sauce. NY Flying Pizza has garlic croissants. Go elsewhere, friends. They're not far.
Finally, on the place itself: we walked into an empty restaurant that shows its age. There are waiting areas with big bench seats that look like they came out of a truck. The table lighting looks like it was half-replaced at some point, so that some tables have lighting option a (green lamp) and some have option b (white lamp) but there's no pattern or order to it. The unheated bathroom greeted me with a spring loaded paper roll holder sitting on the sink, as if to say "help me". The building itself is crying out to be closed, and the food is the best reason to.
In a town where lots of things are run down, old and struggling, I don't know that anyone rushes to places that remind them of slowed or arrested progress.
That all said, our server was nice enough, the price (about $20 for a pizza, drinks, and tip, for two) was right, and the service during our stay was very good despite the rest. Sadly, right across the street, there's a guy with a cardboard arrow advertising instant pick up pies at Little Caesar's for less than half of our price. The quality of the pizza is the same, but the price is improved dramatically.
I think the final part that left a bad taste in my mouth was that as I was going out, I made a point to get the attention of our server and what appeared to be a manager and say "hey, thanks again". No...
Read moreI love eating at the place itself but sense there is a pandemic going on we decided to place an order on the phone. I asked for 2 pizzas one being a large supreme with the stuffed crust. The man on the phone kept saying I was asking for black olives when I didn’t, I repeatedly told him that I didn’t want olives. Afterwards I didn’t want to end up being rude and asked if I could please talk to someone else and he just sighed and said “oh my god” I heard him and said “excuse me sir what did u just say?” he yelled through the phone “ma’am stop asking for black Olives!” I told him I never asked for black olives and said “ok so you asked for a supreme pizza is that going to be it?” I decided to just calm down and said that I also asked for a large pepperoni pizza with the stuffed crust as well and he angrily said if that was going to be it, I said yes please. He asked if I would be paying with cash or credit and I replied with “cash” he then asked if I will be paying with cash or store credit, I said “I will be paying with cash” he later says “ma’am what will you be paying with!!” I again said cash and then the conversation ended. I don’t write this report to sound like a Karen but was at the point of tears with frustration because this man was beyond rude and disrespectful! I would understand if he were an elder personally but he sounded like he was in his mid 20’s to...
Read moreordered a pizza through the app, payment failed then payment showed posted on my bank app twice called and got the call center, the call center passed me to the store the store confirmed only one order was placed, GREAT ! called an hour later to check on order that hadn't showed and was told there was no order hmmmmm ? well I called again and got the rudest most unfriendly person that claimed I never called and no order was placed, as you can see in the picture there was an order and I assure you that I did speak to someone in the store even thought the person that answered claimed I never did. I called back later and got hold of someone different, after the rude person insisted she is the only one that answered the phone. The person that answered his time was very apologetic and gave us the original order in 30 minutes for free. The breakdown occurred with the one who answered the phone an my second call. That person chose conflict over customer service. I probably will not get...
