McGlinn's used to be a favorite of mine, but the past few times I have ventured there, the food quality seems to have drastically gone downhill.
I was there earlier this week and every item that my partner and I shared was of subpar quality (the only thing good was the beer bread, which is just a classic of McGlinn's). Between the two of us, we had a ribeye steak, beer bread, black bean chili, and chipotle cavatappi with steak added on, all of which were extremely lacking in seasoning and thus flavor. My steak was supposed to be medium rare, it was served medium, possibly because of how thin the cut itself was, but it was also so fatty I cut about 1/4 of the steak off and left it to the side. The chili was so bland, my partner added black pepper, chili flakes, and salt to make it edible. The steak strips on the pasta were meh/fine, but again, he had to add additional seasoning to his dish to make it taste like anything at all. I also added salt and pepper to my steak as it seemingly was simply cooked without any sort of prep other than butter/oil when it was being cooked. Being someone who loves to cook steak, it brings out the flavor of the meat better when you do season steak with simple salt/pepper combo prior to cooking/grilling/etc.
Other than the bread, the one item that was slightly seasoned and done well was the side of mashed potatoes with the steak dinner. Walking away with an $80+ bill (we had two NA beers on our tab as well) between the two of our dinners was such a disappointment since I felt we would have had better food at most other restaurants, if not just cooking at home.
On a positive note, the service is always stellar at McGlinn's, Sadie is a gem of a server and is such a sweetheart to have as part of this establishment.
TLDR: A+ service, but very under seasoned and underwhelming food...
Read moreThis has always been a great place to eat and drink when I'm in town. I forget each time how crowded it gets. Had to wait for a table, not a problem, but the waitress wasn't all that attentive to us. Obviously she did have return patrons (locals) that she did pay more attention to, not being in a hurry and understanding it was busy were waited. I had questions and wanted samples of beers (I'm picky about my beers). I felt like the waitress was a little put out that I asked for a taste. Got my tastes loved one of them, then waited for her to come back and take our food and drink orders. (See the pattern now) my companion ordered root beer, once it was drank she put it out for a refill. They took the glass and left. We were told that we would have to pay for the refill. Not a problem, she said she'll just drink the water that was provided. Food came, pizza (for me) and a entree salad for (companion). After we were about half way though our meals waitress came by to see if everything was okay. Companion ordered dessert, I was WAY too full. Pizza was wonderful. Check came very quick after dessert was delivered, it was picked up very quick, and returned quickly. Only speedy portion of the evening. In short, food was delicious, beer was tasty, dessert was scrumptious. Location is great for families, loud and you don't have to worry about irritating anyone (this is a plus for me). But on this evening, if you weren't a regular/local, don't expect our waitress to give you 100%. Maybe 60%. Also, no refills on soft drinks according to the staff that...
Read moreThis was a nice half-way point between family for a birthday dinner, so we drove out here yesterday. My mother and husband both ordered the Philly sandwich (skip it, it's two tiny pieces of roast beef on an overly cooked/hard baguette) and my husband pointed out to the server that the kitchen and forgotten the veggies on his sandwich. She said, "Can I see?" As if she's going to find them when he couldn't?! As if in front of his children, wife, and mother in law he's going to lie about grilled onions?! He showed her, and she offered to have the kitchen grill some onions she would bring him. Then she handed me my salad; I ordered the black and blue with ranch instead of the balsamic (also skip it, there were 4 tiny pieces of meat in the entire thing). She said as she hands it me, "The kitchen put your ranch on the side and dressed your salad in the balsamic. If I have them remake it'll take awhile, do you want to just eat it like this, I eat it with both all the time..." Needless to say I didn't get to eat until everyone else was half done with their meal. Their mac and cheese is bland and dry, but they have almost nothing for children. None of us were ever asked if we'd like a refill on our drinks...
Listen, there's no way you're visit could be this bad, so I'm not saying don't go. And the evening for us was really about enjoying our company so we're not upset. It's not our last meal ever, lol. But I will definitely never be back and will laughingly share this with many others, so there is that. Go to The Windmill, the servers...
