Cone is family-owned and operated and that is perhaps one of the top reasons why the quaint gourmet ice cream shop thrives here in the windy city. They treat EVERY customer like family! You won’t find any other shop that has the ice cream, service, and flair that they do! Owner, Sean McGuire, was born and raised in Ireland and shop Manager, Lauren, is from England.
Besides being so family-oriented and offering such friendly service, their ice cream is hands down some of the best I’ve ever had and without questions is leads ahead of the competition. This may be in part due to their partnership with Plush Horse Ice Cream out of Palos Park, a company that has been making handmade ice cream for 75 years. The Cone teams brings their ideas for new amazing ice cream flavors to the Plush Horse and through trial and error cold creamy dream sensations are born.
Flavors change seasonally and you are guaranteed to discover combinations you’ve never seen anywhere else. I had the pleasure of sampling their divine varieties and was blown away. I sampled about 9 of their flavors including Pumpkin, Banana Caramel, Baileys, Jameson, Guiness with Raisins and Irish Soda Bread, Chocolate Peanut Butter, Rootbeer Float, Apple Pie, and Maple Bacon!!!! Ummm…. yea, Maple…. and BACON!!! The maple ice cream base was out of this world and for all you bacon lovers, they add plenty pieces of candied bacon to the mix. I was in pure ice cream heaven with each taste better than the last! The pumpkin ice cream was some of the best I have ever had in my life! Yes, that good! It was incredibly fresh and simply devine! And you all know how much I love my pumpkin.
What blew me away the most was that every flavor tasted exactly as you’d expect. For example, the rootbeer float tasted exactly like a rootbeer float! How is that even possible? I loved EVERY flavor I tried but hands down my absolute favorite was the Guiness with raisins and Irish Soda Bread. Tell me where else you can get that and where anyone else could possibly make it taste so good! How good you wonder? It was so incredibly amazing that I got a cone of it to go and I savored every lick of it! And I’d go back for more and more and more and……. I think you get my point.
one offers so many delicious ice cream flavors with several cup and cone options including a little mini $0.99 cent cone for the kiddos or for someone just wanting a taste of something sweet after a satisying dinner at one of the West Loops fine dining establishments. They also offer traditional Irish treat – soft serve ice cream with an Irish Choclate Flake Bar…. soooooooooo good!!!!
Currently Cone operates only on weekend hours from Friday evening through Sunday but believe that they do get plenty of calls during the week with disappointing customers craving scoops of their creamy heaven. Come spring time they will be in full swing and as soon as temps allow their patio will be open, too! But don’t wait for warmer temps. Treat yourself now and I guarantee you will not be sorry. And believe me when I say they do solid business even in the winter. If their empty ice cream tubs I spied on my visit aren’t an indication of how much Chicago loves Cone, I don’t know what would be.
Now, get yourself over to Cone Gourmet Ice Cream Shop located at 1047 W. Madison St....
Read moreHello — Just sharing an experience because we love you guys, visit often, and want to continue to support you! The boys working this evening could use some additional training and critical thinking help. We went in around 7pm with my 2 year old and 5 year old, and asked for 2 kids scoops for them. The cup they gave us was extremely small. It’s not the size of the scoop — I get that, it’s a kids size and I want it to be small! But, I asked them why they’re in such a small cup and if I could get the 1 for my 2 year old in the regular sized cup because it’s going to be a messy disaster. The boy working said you changed cup sizes and no. I couldn’t get her scoop transferred into the larger cup. I said it’s going to be super messy, and he replied, “there’s napkins over there”. And then I asked for a waffle cone and a single scoop, which he promptly broke the cone and then tried to smoosh it all back together with his bare hands. When he showed it to me he said, “I can put this in a cup for you if you want.” …the same sized cup I had JUST asked for my 2 year old… anyway, put off by his bare hands smooshing my cone together I asked if I could just get new cone, in which he said it was the last waffle cone. Ok, when he saw it break the first time, I wish he would have just said, sorry this one broke, it’s the last one, so do you want something else… vs. trying to smoosh it all back together. Anyway, those boys can use a little help. And if there’s anyway you might be able to honor a bigger cup size for a 2 year old, that would be helpful. Ice cream got all over the table, chair and floor with the comical size of the cup. Our experience tonight was the worst we’ve ever had, and we frequent often, and also had a great experience using the private room in the past too. Thank you for your consideration, please get those...
Read moreMy daughter and I take classes at Krav Maga just a couple doors down and have been savoring a taste of ice cream from this particular spot for some time now. We finally stop after class and it's a rather warm evening, on 6/8/20, for a post workout snack around 6:30p. It's no contact which is great.
I finally decide on a double scoop of spotted turtle on a sugar cone and my daughter is unsure of her pick. I place my order with an older man at the window. After my request, I ask if my daughter can taste a bit of another choice before we decide because if she likes it, she would also like a double scoop. He looks and me funny, then says we don't do the samples thru the window. I then ask can she change the ice cream if we pay for it and she doesn't like it, and he replied no!
Thinking he would have some understanding of us wanting to have ice cream together, I explained we would both like to enjoy our choice and she want something different than the normal chocolate she always gets. He stated they didn't do the samples thru the window and that they didn't have any more spoons anyways. I saw 2 ladies before me with ice cream in a cup and they both had spoons. I then asked how would one eat their ice cream from a cup of they had no more spoons and what were they doing for people who wanted a sundae? He then gave a speech about covid and not giving the taste on the spoon thru the window for health reasons. I then stated the obvious, "you are handing all of the ice cream thru the window". He then tells me to have my daughter to choose something she knows she likes and that they have a bunch of flavors because he wasn't giving her a taste!! I thanked him and left the window. I will not spend money with places that treat me as if I am...
