I had high hopes for Vietfive Coffee and it did not disappoint. I did not have a chance to fully explore Chicago’s Vietnamese cuisine scene like I wanted to but I made it a point to come here.

Coming from Houston, TX where I’m surrounded by high quality Vietnamese cuisine and coffee I was ready to be wowed and Vietfive brewed up a memorable experience!

First of all, the coffee was excellent! I’ve had a lot of good ca phê sữa đá and I’ve had some mediocre ones as well. The ca phê sữa đá at Vietfive was exceptional. It had the strong robusta flavor I love and the condensed milk made it just sweet enough but not overwhelmingly sweet. I would put it up there with some of the best I’ve had in Houston. You really cannot go wrong with the coffee here.

I had heard about the bánh mì empanada and I was intrigued. Having grown up eating empanadas and having come to love bánh mì, this sounded like a match made in heaven and the wheels in my head started spinning about how many more Mexican-Vietnamese combinations and collaborations could be created. I ordered the tofu bánh mì. I enjoyed every bite. The tofu and vegetables were seasoned fantastically and it was quite filling. If I could offer any feedback, I’d say that the empanada crust was a bit too toasted and thus too flaky and stiff. Otherwise it was awesome! I wish I would have ordered another one. In fact I regret not ordering a bánh mì but I was headed to Timeout Market afterwards and needed to save room in my bánh mì belly. The vibe inside was laidback and chill. There were limited seats but I was able to find a table quickly and enjoy my ca phê sữa đá and bánh mì empanada. Service was good. Quick and polite.

I had such a great experience at this café! Jared went above and beyond to make sure we were happy. He kindly let my mom sample a few drinks, and when he noticed she wanted the jerk chicken empanada but it was sold out, he went out of his way to make it for her! The empanada was incredible—it had the best flavor, the crust was perfectly thin and crunchy, and the presentation was beautiful.

My mom ended up ordering the cà phê sữa with condensed milk, and Jared made it specifically stronger for her taste. She absolutely loved the perfect balance of sweetness and boldness.

As for me, I had the ube iced latte, and it was amazing—so smooth with a delicious flavor profile. The café itself has such a cozy vibe. I do wish it was bigger because it definitely deserves more love! The tables were spotless, and the atmosphere was welcoming.
