I went to the Deep Purpl located on 500 West Madison st. two Sundays in a row (3/7 and 3/14) around 11am and the person who was working there in both dates did not look like she wanted to do the job, the first time around I had asked for toppings (sweet condensed milk, coconut, fry powdered milk, strawberries and kiwis) I asked firstly to put sweet condensed milk in between açaí layers and she replied “it goes on top”, in a very impolite way, then she put bananas instead of kiwis and when I said I didn’t ask for bananas she threw the whole thing out in the trash when she could’ve simply taken out the bananas out of the top, and then the second time she again refused to put sweet condensed milk in between açaí layers and she refused again, so I had to ask a separate cup with sweet condensed milk, this happened on March 7th. Then today (3/14) I went there again with the same friend who went with me the first time around and she REFUSED to give us and approximately 6 other people service because she had a lot of online orders to prepare and said that she couldn’t take any order for 30 other minutes, and I get it that she doesn’t have help (which she should have) but açaí is like ice cream, we were there for around 10 minutes and only one person came to pick up the order, by the time other people got their orders they were probably already melted, she wouldn’t even interval orders from online to in person, me, my friend and the other 6 people left without what they went in for because the person behind the counter literally refused to...
Read moreNeeding a quick bite while we traversed downtown Chicago on Marathon Day (Our daughter was running in it), we happened by Deep Purpl. Empanadas are an easy sell and they had a good variety of them.
This is a small storefront that, as I recall, doesn't have a restroom for customer use. It's got a number of seats facing a large window facing Wabash Ave. Even on a Sunday morning the people watching was interesting.
This is an order-at-the-counter kinda place. I ordered the ham and cheese empanada and a bacon/date/gouda empanada and a bottle of water. As my wife sat down at one of the 6 or so seats available I waited for our food a different lady was heating our empanadas. The lady who took our order did fine, given I could tell that English was her second language (Spanish being first, I'm pretty sure), while the woman preparing out food apparently only spoke Spanish. She tried, but every time she had a question she had to get the other lady to translate. Not a big deal, as it illustrates how diverse a city Chicago is.
Our food took less than 10 minutes. The empanadas were small-ish (the nature of empanadas) but were HOT and tasty. It was exactly what we needed to get us fueled up for the rest of the walking we needed to do while trying to catch up with our daughter.
I can imagine how busy Deep Purpl must get on a business day. While we didn't try an Açaí bowl, they looked delicious and they had A LOT of...
Read moreThe downtown Chicago location has awful service or moreso they just decide to put up a back in 20 minutes sign up at least once a week (3 straight weeks between 8-9 am I have gone to the counter to see this sign). Please note that sign is useless as I am not waiting 20 minutes and I don't know when you left. Please at least put the ETA on when you are coming back. Either way this is quite annoying to walk to get breakfast during the business day during normal hours and then have to turn around. I get emergencies happen but this is a regular occurrence.
Also if you order online and ask for extra anything (ie Peanut butter). You pay for it but you definitely don't get extra - at least I have not two times now.
I really do like their acai bowl and disagree with the reviewer who says people who like this place haven't tried others. I have probably had 10 - 20 acai bowls / cups from different places and Deep Purpl's acai is top 3 for me. Very healthy and organic ingredients to add, but please hire people who understand customer service or this loyal/frequent customer is going stop being so loyal...
