This is my first time at Azuma. I will note that my experiences with sushi are typically at AYCE joints or somewhere cheap/affordable like Oishi. The food has been really good. Even though the sushi/fish is more expensive than I’m accustomed to, they have a wide variety of hot and cold appetizers that my friends and I really enjoyed and filled up on. Special shout out for the fried calamari at a mere $8. (This place easily warrants at least two $$s in terms of cost) I wanted to make a special mention to our server Cha-Cha (please excuse the spelling) - she is absolutely incredible with superb service. Very welcoming and revisiting at the perfect cadence, we never wanted for food, drink, or water. If I may be so cheeky, I would recommend her as your server if you do come visit. Atmosphere is super cozy. They have some inspiration from original Japanese architecture that really helps the restaurant stand apart from the plethora of other Houston restaurants. Do you like cocktails? This is a great place to have fun with friends and coworkers over an array of fun cocktails! Well mixed and modestly strong, I will definitely be revisiting this establishment with friends.

I still give 2 star to this restaurant because of the Robata bar, thought the quality has declined so much. Check the photo I updated below: first two photos were took a few days ago, and the last photos were took in August 2015. The first one was the beef tongue Robata. Slices was cut in uneven thickness some were too thick to eat, and also the thick parts were too raw to eat. Compare the beef tongue before they lost the quality in cutting and cooking. The one I ate recently just like a non chewable steak instead of beef tongue. As for the pork belly it was not so disappointed as beef tongue. The fat part in pork belly is fine but the lean meat would definitely stuck between your teeth, they were over cooked. Personally for the Robata, the pork belly was too salty. And the vegts for each Robata items was much less than before. The restaurant seems like renovated recently but I have to say I’m not that happy to eat here vs before. You used to have a good Robata sensei but now the cooking quality has declined so much. After the last try I may delete this restaurant from my Houston’s favorite Japanese restaurants list...

First time tried Omakase by Chef Diego for my birthday and it was astonishing! Previously went for sushi rolls and loved it (despite the restaurant being far from my house), but after trying the chef chosen variety of appetizers, sushi and sashimi will be back more often. The dishes we tried were so distinct – fusion of Japanese cuisine with modern touches. Plates were decorated as art creations; taste surprised and satisfied the palate, the textures were marvelously fused. Perfectly combined flavors and highest grade seafood were perfect for celebrating my special occasion, want to return for more. The place may not appear luxury or chic but food definitely is the top quality. It has been open for many years and still provides excellent quality and service (as sushi connoisseur I noticed the trend for quality to do down for many high end sushi restaurants). Definitely will be back and highly recommend as best place for Omakase in Houston.

A Dangerously Incompetent Experience – Avoid This Place

I wish I could rate the food alone, which was admittedly tasty, but the catastrophic service and outright danger we were subjected to completely obliterates any positive aspect of this meal. This was far beyond a simple "off night"; this was a masterclass in negligence and unaccountability.

Our experience was defined by one individual: our server, Santo. To call him inattentive would be a generous understatement. He was a menace. His service was painfully slow, but that was the least of our concerns. The critical issue was his complete lack of awareness and care, which directly put my children at risk.

In the span of one meal, he nearly spilled scalding hot soup on my young kids and then actually bumped my son with a heavy tray. As a parent, watching a staff member's reckless behavior come so close to seriously injuring your children is absolutely terrifying.

When I, understandably upset, addressed this with him, his response was not an apology. It was not concern. It was flippant, dismissive, and defensive. He had the audacity to claim the near-accident was my fault. His demeanor was so erratic and unprofessional that it was alarming. I don't make accusations lightly, but his behavior was so bizarrely irresponsible that it raises serious questions.

Hoping for a resolution, we brought this to management. Their response was the final nail in the coffin. They were shockingly lax, dismissive, and failed to treat the situation with the urgency it deserved. Their apathy made it clear that customer safety and satisfaction are not priorities here. They are apparently perfectly comfortable employing staff who endanger children and then blame the parents for it.

The food is good, but no meal is worth this level of stress and risk. This establishment has a profound failure in training, oversight, and basic standards of safety. I will never return, and I would strongly caution any family—or anyone who expects to be served by professionals and not hostile hazards—to spend their money and time elsewhere. An appalling, unacceptable experience from...

It's been a year I haven't come back to this place. I always have good experience when I'm there. And this time we are there to celebrate my bday.

We called to make a reservation and told them we have gift cards not sure if we can use. Staff was super nice and had the manager verified the info quickly. We got, there around 8 on a Friday night, it wasn't super packed or noisy which makes me happy. Lol.

I usually order regular miso but I tried their asari miso instead, very fresh clam, no sand inside. Good temperature, guess a good start. Then it came my favorite seaweed salad, honest I have never go to a Japanese Restaraunt and had bad seaweed salad, it's like you can never get that wrong, lol.

I ordered a hamachi Kama, that usually takes a while since they have to grill it, some places would have it burnt a lot but I like it this time, you have to squeeze lemon juicy on the fish jaw, it's better you peel the skin on the side and eat it later and try to soak the lemon juicy into the dish before you eat it, not only it get rid of the fishy smell but it bring a freshness into the fish. It's a huge piece, some other place would have a small one so it wouldn't have too much meat on it. The meat on fish jar are super taste. Highly recommended!

Then we got the cod. Snow fish, super sweet and grill to its perfect. As greedy as we are we couldn't stop there and also ordered some their special sushi rolls.

But my favorite of the night is definitely the desert. Fried ice cream and banana tempura. I didn't care about the calorie so it was super good. Lol.

Overall very enjoyable night and thanks the staff for being...

We were seating over 40 min without food. A server was not checking whether foods on order out to the table. We asked three times when is my order coming while other people who came in later than us were eating and even finished. One of servers came to us since I called her. I asked her to find out how much longer we would wait to get food. However, she was just checking on other guests. So, I walked to her to get the answer. At that time, my two kiddo kept saying that they are hungry and why we are not getting foods although others who came in later than us are eating. It was not pleasant to see others are eating while we were hungry and upset with not getting foods. We could not leave with hungry kiddos since it was lunch hour so every place should be busy. Additionally, we had an doctor app at 1:30pm. I did not want to take my kiddo to the doctor with empty stomach. Although we came in 12:10pm ish, we got foods at 1pm and we had to be so hurry to finish food. None of managers came to say 'sorry' and what happens on our orders until I asked three times. One more, if they took special care of us after I asked three times, I would not be upset and not write this review. I got my food 20min after I first asked them where is my order, which I think it was very normal processing time for an order in restaurant. Food might be good (not wow great) but there are tons of places with good foods and professional...
