UPDATE: Still disappointed, more so even. We drove an hour out of state again to get food for a viewing party today. The portions are scant. We used to get one order of bulgogi to feed two people. Today's two orders wouldn't feed one person. We got four banchan for two orders. Not two assortments. We didn't even get one assortment, more like a half. Four tiny cups total. No lettuce wraps either.
Beyond that we ordered two orders of gimbab and received none. Instead we got two orders of what looks like Jjamppong (I had to google it). I'm allergic to shrimp and wheat. We did NOT order that. When I called to have the gimbab refunded I was told my partner explicitly ordered Jjamppong. Be serious. He only knows two Korean words and he only knows them because they are in the text message I sent him with the two items to order. There is no way he said gimbab in a way that sounds like Jjamppong, and there is no way imaginable that he made up a word he'd never heard of for a dish I'm allergic to the two main components of.
This is even more frustrating as I called earlier in the day to see how early a phone order would need to be placed as we were going to be driving an hour to pick it up during rush hour, and I was told that there would be hardly any wait. He called 20 minutes away and was told it would be 40 minutes. I don't understand.
All that and we paid $75 for the privilege...
I don't think we'll be trying a third time. A few years ago we RAVED about them, it's an entirely different establishment now.
ORIGINAL: Very, very, very disappointed. We drove from out of state and paid extra for extra banchan to get all the way home to find out there were not even three of everything. So we were owed three for the three meals and paid extra for two courses of extra banchan and we received less than what came...
Read moreThe menu here was big. It also contained many things that the squeamish westerner (me) would shy away from. I don't know if that is why I was the only non-asian in the place. To be fair, it was before dinner hour and therefore wasn't crowded (maybe a dozen by the time I left at 4:30), so I don't know if that is the norm, but the wall contained maybe two dozen items displayed on it in Korean, some of which offered no English translations. I suspect that if you are Korean or adventurous you would likely find things here you wish were more available, or made the way you would like them..
I don't know for certain though. I have no Korean roots and nearly always get dol sot bi bim bap, so I don't exactly have broad knowledge. And I live in Pittsburgh so I have no local frame of reference.
When my food was served there was one other couple in the restaurant (again, 4 PM). My server brought a tray of banchan that I assumed was part mine and part for the other couple. I was surprised when she laid 10 dishes on me, and a miso soup. I am used to 3 or 4. Each one was fresh and tasty (spicy). Come to think of it, the couple got the same 10 dishes. Maybe they don't adjust for the number of people.
The DSBBB here has a light flavor compared to that of Pittsburgh restaurants. It also didn't scorch my tongue the way it sometimes does (maybe it had time to cool while I ate all that banchan). The vegetables were clearly fresh because they had a bit of that raw crunch that I like. It was nice overall. And it was only $10. It's $18...
Read moreIf you are looking for an authentic Korean restaurant with no frills, this is the restaurant for you. The only downside is that the price is a little high for the food that you get. The quality is slightly lower than what I expect from a place that would charge that high of price for their dishes. Otherwise, it was a good experience.
I ordered the Kang Jang Pi. It says for 2, but it can easily feed 4. The quality of the noodles in the Kang Jang Pi could have been higher given the price that you pay for it. Our appetizer was the small Pan Fried Dumpling. It was probably the best part of the meal. I also ordered their Bi Bim Bap. It was good but nothing special, kind of plain. What I really did like was the 8 small side dishes of Kimchi that is traditionally served at Korean restaurants. I could have just ate those side dishes and been happy.
Overall, it was a positive experience. If you really want traditional Korean food, this is the place for you. While we were there, a group of 8 Korean students came in and dined. There were also 3 Korean families that were eating there too. The downside if there is any, is that fare is a little plain for the price you pay. I've had much better Korean food for less at other Korean restaurants I've visited. I would go back if I wanted to eat authentic Korean food but I would probably try different dishes to see if I just picked some bad samples. Most likely, I would want to try a different Korean restaurant so I can...
