My family (parents, special needs sister, husband, and four month old baby) came here while on a (hot) day trip to Wilmington from Topsail Island. My husband and I are huge craft brew fans, and can't help but try local beers when we travel.
The atmosphere of Flytrap Brewing was modern and clean, appealing to our tastes. The walls featured artwork from a local artist, and they were so adorable, we couldn't help but purchase a few small prints for our bar/dining room area. The artist was Kelly Sweitzer, and she owns The Pepper Mill Shop. Shout out to her for some creative artwork dealing with food and beer (two of our favorite things).
The bartender was accommodating and helpful. I'm not sure if he was one of the owners, but we did get a chance to talk to one of the owners (the wife of the husband and wife team). It was great to speak with her, and get to know their history and process a bit more.
They had four of their own beers on tap, as well as a few other beers. We were only interested in the Flytrap beers, so my husband, dad, and I got a flight. We had the Chicory Dubbel, the Hoppy Tripel, Rehder's Red Ale, and the Belgian Blonde. They seem to specialize in Belgian-style beers. We all really enjoyed the Chicory Dubbel. It had a great, unique flavor, which is impressive considering they have not been open that long. Most other breweries we have visited, and have been open for a similar amount of time, do not have this much flavor in their beers. I enjoyed the Hoppy Tripel, but my dad and husband did not like it the best. The Rehder's Red was the only one that I wasn't really that impressed with (but hey, never going to be impressed with every beer from a brewery, so it doesn't take away from our experience...someone else may LOVE this beer). We all enjoyed the Belgian Blonde, and that's saying a lot considering I'm not a huge fan of this style.
There's really no reason for me NOT to give this place a five-star review, but I always like to leave room for improvement. The only suggestion I have is adding some craft sodas (as far as I know, they weren't available) for those who don't drink (i.e. my special needs sister). If we travel to Wilmington again, we will certainly visit Flytrap Brewing to try some of their other beers. Thanks for a great experience, and best of luck in...
Read moreHad a bit of an upsetting experience here. Went here to see a friend play some music. While he was on my wife got a few beers and enjoyed them, we also got some food from the food truck which was nice. I dont drink very often so i did not get beer. After my friends set was done we were getting ready to head out soon. I saw some guy walk in and get a "crowler" which is a can of beer that they can right there at the bar. I thought this was really cool and decided i wanted one to take home and enjoy another night. I had no intention of drinking this night as i just wasnt feeling it. I told the bar tender i wanted one of those crowlers, can i try this beer before i buy? He gave me a sample and i agreed to it. Next thing i know, he sets down a glass of beer in front of me. Im confused. I said, oh im sorry i wanted a crowler. He then told me what a crowler is and listed the beers that they can put in the crowler. I asked if the beer i got was one of the beers that they could not put in the crowler. He said they could do that one in a crowler. Im really confused at this point. I said, yeah thats what i want. What he said next i couldnt even understand, but when he asked for payment, i figured he wasnt getting me a crowler, and i had to either drink this beer or dump it. I paid for it...

This was my favorite brewery in Wilmington and I still think the beer is outstanding. However if you are a parent BEWARE they are still not allowing anyone under 21. Even in the beer garden you can’t enter. I understood this as a Covid issue and to help with capacity but when there are 6 people in the beer garden you would think more customers would be welcome. Some local establishments do not allow kids after 7pm and that is understandable however 3pm is a different story. This is the only brewery and tap room in Wilmington not allowing patrons with children. It is unclear from the website as well. The beer is great so you can get it to go but we would have spent more time and money if we were allowed...
