Islands Fresh Mex Grill — Restaurant in Wilmington

Up until this most recent visit I would have told you I was undecided about Islands. Upon leaving Islands Grill after this visit they made me a believer.

I ordered off the wall, as it came and was not disappointed in the burrito at all. It was fresh, flavor full and really, really good. Love their selection of salsa.

Some other notables that I believe earned Islands five-stars. Serve Safe Certifications. When I was at the register I looked at what I thought was a menu because of how many items there were (an entire wall, literally). What I realized very quickly was that it was not their menu I was looking at but a wall of certificates announcing the name of each employee that has earned a serve safe certification. I happen to know the effort it takes to achieve one of those certificates and was very impressed with Islands dedication to food quality and service by promoting their employees' accomplishments in such large numbers. For some restaurants it is the assistant managers and managers who typically enroll and achieve serve safe status. At Islands it seems they encourage more than just management to achieve that certificate and I was really impressed and proud of the employees at this restaurant for working so hard. If I could give ZERO stars for this place honestly I would. I guess one star is adequate due to the soda machine working, and the cold bean and corn salsa being the best thing in the restaurant. I feel horrible writing this review due to how many positive reviews I have found on here but, my experience at this location was below unacceptable. My first experience at an Island, and let me tell you expectations were high, all the way up until I asked for a chicken burrito and found the chicken was ground. Absolutely disgusting, but I held hope that maybe it would be full of flavor? Wrong no flavor, yellow rice completely dry, apparently queso here is white water. Nothing had flavor nothing had proper consistency. When dealing with the service I would say it was below expectations as well. Not friendly, not welcoming, not professional. If this is how Island works and it's following enjoy this, then so be it. My partner and I came from out of town to see some friends. We decided to stop by islands because it’s usually pretty good! The food was great, but the service of one of the employees was absolutely unacceptable. We each got the jerk chicken burrito, but in a bowl. I had asked for extra sauce, which they provided, but I had meant the other sauce that was on the burrito. It was my mistake, so I didn’t say anything. My partner then asked me if I wanted the other sauce, knowing what I meant and I was like yea but it’s no problem at all. My partner then asked for the other sauce on the burrito. They seemed confused about our interaction, so my partner explained it was the other sauce and we just wanted extra and would gladly pay for it. The employee then THREW the sauce down into the chips with aggression and annoyance. Then THREW the other sauce into the garbage can right in front of us aggressively.
