With so many Asian cuisine restaurants opening up on Walzem rd it's a bit tough to know who to go with for a tasty meal. Tokyo Express is in the same parking lot as Flaming Grill Buffet (formerly China Harbor), and it's going to need excellent service and great food in order to be a top choice.
My initial impression was that it was a bit hectic inside. I visited at about 9pm on a Wednesday night and it looks like they were closing up the dine-in. I think I sort of let myself in since the side door doesn't actually lock. It really resembles a lot of what the Whataburger used to be with some added features (see photos). Floors are the same, booths are the same, kind of makes you wonder what took so long to finish the building.
They honored my order but basically told me to hurry up and order. -1 Star, online it says they are open until 10. But they later came up to me to ask for my opinion on the speed of service and that they were working on getting meals out faster. So that's great. Honestly, you may have a better experience in the drive thru.
Okay here is the food review, I ordered the Texas Roll, calamari balls, and spring rolls.
The Texas roll was excellent, its tempura fried and the steak tasted just fine. Really you pay this price for HEB sushi so I'm just going to say this is a much better option. Also, it's nice to have someplace that actually serves sushi 5hat isnt a buffet. You used to have to go to Live Oak or North Star area to get a roll. They should really capitalize on this because this is a great advantage they have.
Spring rolls were okay, nice crispy outside, and gooey veggies inside. You'll know what I mean when you eat them.
The calamari balls, I wouldnt reccomend so much. Texture is a bit like biting into an uncooked donut hole with squid inside. The eel sauce makes it sweet. I wouldn't necessarily change anything, but if you're in the mood for calamari, go with the fried appetizer.
I will edit this review based on future visits, and over time. The rest of the reviews are really mixed so I hope this...
Read moreDon’t get my wrong this place does have alright sushi but the owners treat their employees badly. I literally heard the lady telling a girl WORK! Work!! After she was done talking to me (a customer).. To whoever the owner is please chill out you’re paying under minimum wage. From snatching money out of their hands or being verbally abusive cause at the end of the day that’s what it is ABUSE. You wouldn’t be able to be In business without your workers. Also your customers are always watching whether you think we’re not. I won’t give my business to owners who treat their workers like trash
Update: To owner reply: I’ve seen it not once but on multiple occasions. I just brushed it off as restaurant talk. Then I saw it in person when I came to pick up an order and it definitely was not normal. I’m not going into what you think is a livable wage cause we definitely won’t see eye to eye but I won’t even go into that. It also wasn’t only me that saw the treatment but another person accompanying me as well. Obviously you may not care cause I’m just another $ sign to you but I’ve been coming here since 2019. I’m not saying it was you “the owner” but I’d definitely look into your management cause they must not think that customers are watching them. It’s bad for business when you have those kind of people in charge. Especially when you’re trusting them with your business and they are scaring your loyal...
Read moreWe were so excited for this place! We ordered three things Shrimp hibachi, steak Hibachi, and the Katsu chicken, also ordered Spring rolls, sushi starter roll, and Calamari balls . First let me say that the concept of the menu was pretty cool , with that being said the Shrimp was decent had a good seasoning but it was kinda dry not really juicy or anything the veggies were okay they were steamed but had zero seasoning on them which was okay I had the noodles as the side they seemed like they weren't made fresh they tasted a little strange but not bad. The steak was the same dry and nothing special that one had the fried rice as the side it was disappointingly bland with the same veggies. The Katsu chicken was actually really good however it had the same boring sides ,the Calamari balls were something I'd advise not to try they were very strange fried balls that are mushy inside with squid pieces very weird and not good! Now the Spring rolls were pretty good they had cucumber in them and I liked the sauce , the Sushi starter was decent it wasn't the best sushi I've had but it wasn't bad ,overall giving the two stars, because of the menu options. I thought it was a cool concept ,but the execution for us wasn't up to par . My boyfriend is a Chef and our food standards are a little above average so maybe others will enjoy ,however I don't see...
