This evening was my first experience dining with “Thai Sawatdee” in Winston-Salem. Noting strong online customer reviews, I arrived with high expectations. Honestly, pulling-up to the place is anti-climactic as it’s a small restaurant in an aging strip mall off of a main road. The exterior didn’t give me confidence, but it didn’t stop me either. Once inside, however, the staff were warm and inviting. It’s a rather small place with only seating for maybe 50 people. The decor isn’t extravagant, but neither are the prices. They had two menus with one for Thai and another for Vietnamese options. I ordered an iced Thai tea and scanned the menus. I asked my waitress what was the house specialty? What does their kitchen do well? She couldn’t decide, but after some discussion we agreed on a the red curry duck; a “special” item for whatever that means. Look, I have had some mediocre duck dishes before. Especially when sauces are added, if the duck doesn’t have a crispness to it, the skin just makes the whole dish feel fatty. Folks, the duck was crispy, moist inside and yet not over-cooked. The red curry sauce was creamy, spicy and yet sweet. To my taste, it was a bit too sweet, perhaps with a bit much coconut added, but they are cooking for the American palate and I generally prefer a more pungent curry. The vegetables mixed with the sauce included pineapple, peppers and basil which were cooked and yet still slightly crisp. The rice was semi-sticky and had a solid grain texture, no mush. For around $15.00 or so, this option is a steal. I’d order it again without hesitation. Next time around, I am going to try the...
Read moreNot sure what happened tonight but our take out meal was awful. It was our first time ordering here based on positive reviews and were were so disappointed.
I ordered pad woon Sen and my husband got pork fried rice. Both dishes had no flavor to them at all. I don't think my noodle dish actually any sauce at all as it was colorless but just wet. It just tasted like plain boiled noodles and veggies. There was no visible sauce or seasoning. Chicken was plain and dry.
My husband's rice dish was also extremely bland. The most noticeable flavor was that of the plain egg mixed into the rice.
We ended up using our own sauces and a lot of seasoning at home to make it reasonable to eat a small portion since we spent the money already. The rest went in the trash unfortunately.
Our crab Rangoons were fine, no identifiable crab though. Tasted mostly just like salty cream cheese. Dipping Sauce was good.
Again, I am not sure why both our our entrees were such a miss as this place has good reviews overall. We are just generally confused about the whole thing because it was so different compared to the reviews and pictures.
Hopefully it was just an off day for them. There are so many good Thai places in Winston. It is unlikely we will order again from here with all other options...

The menu offered a great variety of traditional Thai dishes, and I appreciated the detailed descriptions that helped in making our choices. For the main course, I ordered the Yellow Curry and my Fiancé had the Prik Prow duck it was undoubtedly one of the best I’ve ever had—flavorful, fresh, and beautifully presented.
For dessert, we tried the mango sticky rice, and it was the perfect sweet ending to our meal.
