Like many others who have lived in other areas, and know what Greek food is supposed to be, we all are starved for a proper gyro place. For some reason the greater St. Paul area can't figure out this simple sandwich! A friend told us of Spitz, so we decided to check it out. The first impression is a bit of confusion, for a Mediterranean place it reminds me of a Mexican place, sorta..?? nothing about the place says Mediterranean. I get that people like to make fusion places (I never like them, but ok). Once inside it's confusing what to do next. Do I order and sit down? there is a bar, so do I order and then sit at the bar, or sit at the bar and order? The menu took a bit to figure out, but I have seen much worse. We sat at the bar so could observe the operation (I won't go into why, but I'll say I'm a bit of a nerd on human behavior studies, business processes, and more) watching those who came in after us, it was obvious every new customer felt as we did. confusion about what to do, and they struggled to find what to order on the menu. (Lots of science work has been done on menus, generally, you want the time for them to pick what they want in under 60 seconds, 30 is better! I watched several that took at least 2 minutes. We ordered gyros of course but luckily, I spotted the Berliner sauce listed on the ingredients. That sauce is for Döner NOT gyros. And they put the fries IN the gyros, no lettuce either. For the love of God could I just get a proper gyro?!! While at the bar waiting for our food, we again saw something that is an epidemic in this area, managers conducting their business in full view and earshot of customers. Folks, get an office in the back. Your real job at a restaurant is to create an experience for your customers, we don’t want to see you doing your paperwork, making calls to vendors, reading mail, and so on. The other staff were talking amongst themselves instead of engaging with customers. Overall, it just screams unprofessional to those paying attention and creates a feeling of, “I don’t like that place but don’t know why” for those who are not. I see this all over in this area. The food came out, and bravo! They have the right flavors (without the darn Berliner sauce of course), the correct pita, the right flavor of meat (I mean this should be hard, but St Paul just can't seem to figure it out, and given that Chicago is just down the road…baffles me) good portions of meat too, they have the proper diced tomatoes, the tzatziki sauce is proper. Just lose the fries and add some lettuce and you will have it! About 5 seconds after my wife and I made these comments to each other, a guy came in and we heard him order a gyro, no Berliner sauce, add lettuce. Lol, my people! This speaks to my first point; we all are starved for a proper gyro. This guy figured out how to get one. So kudos to Spitz for at least making it possible even though we have to alter your offering. The fries are awesome, so another point! The bottom line is Spitz has a proper gyro if you know what to ask for, it is clean, and people are friendly, but this is not a Mediterranean place, it is confusing, management is not paying attention to details, and the moment a proper gyro place opens people will go there, or at least people like me. Till then I have a way to scratch the gyro...
Read moreWe came in as 4 to dine in and felt unwelcome and discriminated against immediately. Pedro, the store manager on site served us and constantly spoke in a condescending and unpleasant way. We are a Asian family from Woodbury and were confused and displeased with his attitude towards us in comparison to white costumers. Although this may not have been his intention, his unchecked bias came off as hostile and uncalled for..
First, we walked into the restaurant and did not see a "wait to be seated" sign. Upon seating ourselves, Pedro came oner immediately and indicated we needed to wait to be seated. I did not see any sign that required us to be seated by the staff and as customers came in, I did not see the staff seating anyone.
When I walked over to order from the menu, Pedro took my order. I asked him to add a cherry slushy to my order in which he replied, "that will be six dollars extra". It was not necessary for him to call out the extra cost which made it seem like he thought I did not understand how to order food or that I did not have money to pay for the slushy.
When the food arrived, we asked for mayo and he replied "No ma'am, we are a Greek resturant". He made it seem like we didn't know this was a Greek restaurant and that we were uneducated.
Pedro's attitude was terrible. We have lived in Woodbury for over 20 years and have never been treated this way in any other dining situation. We are never coming back.
Please management speak to him and correct this behavior as this is terrible service and completely uncalled for. Personally, as a person of color it was embarrassing to see the contrast in how Padero treated us with such disrespect when he was clearly kissing up to and very polite as well as friendly with all the other...
Read moreI have been to spitz a couple of times and the food and service was great! Unfortunately when I visited on 9/2/2023, it wasn't the case. I took my mom out telling her how much we loved spitz. My wife, mom, and myself ordered several dishes, 3 mugs of beer, and a dessert. When the beer came out, they were the smaller sizes and when we pointed it out, server "Coi" shrugged. He said we didn't order the larger beers, which we did, and if we wanted the larger beers, we'd need to pay for them since we were supposedly charged for the smaller sizes. I was visibly annoyed and also struggling with the umbrella outside so just said "fine" and Coi left. He never offered to help with the umbrella. I walked inside and said I'd pay the difference between the small size and the mug which he charged us for and then tried to pour the pints of beer into the mug. I asked for fresh beers since we didnt order the small beers and didnt want flat beer and did pay the difference. Coi said he didn't want to waste beer and also made a rude comment about there only being 2 frosty mugs left and would I be able to handle that. I was already angry and then when the food came out, they had forgotten the dessert. Which Coi accused us of ordering incorrectly. I asked the female staff what Coi's name was and suggested he work on his people skills. She rudely said, "That's your personal opinion". (She was also the one who apparently entered our order in incorrectly). I emailed the manager/owner (per the website) who never responded. Overall, just a bad experience with super inconsiderate, incompetent,...
