Recently I had lunch at Davis Bakery & Delicatessen on Chagrin Road in Woodmere, Ohio. I enjoyed my lunch. Davis Bakery & Delicatessen is located in a strip mall on the south side of Chagrin Road. There is plenty of free, off-street parking in front of the restaurant. When you walk in the door there are shelves of oversize - compared to your typical fast food sandwich shops - individual potato chips to choose from. There is a sign that reads, grab your choice of chips, get in line and place your sandwich order at the deli counter. Take the order ticket and move to the line near the bakery counter and pay at the register. If you are dining in, like I did, take your ticket grab your beverage and take a seat in the dining room. The staff will bring your deli order to your table. If you are taking-out, wait at the deli counter for your order then move to the line near the bakery counter to pay then exit the restaurant. They had a good number of folks in line at the deli counter on this weekday. A good mixture of both dine-in and take-out customers. Their menu has a good selection of sandwiches and sides. They, also, have soup. I ordered the corn beef on rye with yellow mustard. The amount of corned beef was a lesser amount than at other delicatessens. They offer three sizes of sandwiches: jr., regular and king size. I ordered the regular size. The corned beef was tasty. The sandwich comes with a Kosher pickle spear and two small cookies. I, also, ordered a bowl of beef barley soup, a side of cucumber salad and a dark cherry fountain drink. The soup was excellent had a slightly spicy taste. Not your Mother's bland beef barley soup. Just enough heat to make the soup delicious! The cucumber salad was fresh and refreshing - great taste. The bakery counter has a great selection of cookies, pastries and breads. The dining area is kept clean with a staff member dedicated to delivering your meal and cleaning the table after you remove your plates, etc. to the garbage. There is limited outside seating overlooking the parking lot for warmer months. There are separate Men's and Women's restrooms in the dining area. The Men's room is clean. How incredibly lucky I am to have noticed this bakery’s modest sign from across the road. I’m from out of town and had never heard of this gem. Bustling with locals as I walked in, there’s a large but quickly moving line for the bakery and I join it. A woman on the phone hands me a treat and says, walnut roll, fresh out of the oven. And walks away to handle something in the back. It was heavenly. The staff works quickly and I can tell they are skilled at communicating. From years in food service I know what a skill it is to balance respect for a customers time, while also taking care of their questions, and engaging with them in a friendly and meaningful way. The staff was a 10/10, with their lighthearted jokes, and their quips with customers about their regular orders and jobs on their lunch breaks. I overheard someone order a breakfast sandwich and added one of the same to my bakery order. Another customer added that I should grab a coconut bar. Everyone was ordering challah so I did too. There’s a deep sense of welcoming and community here and it inspired me to write a review. And now that I’m home and can try everything, the food is as delightful as the service.
