Outstanding! We visited El Pelanque for lunch upon the recommendation of a friend. Were seated on the beautifl patio. The service we received was personable/efficient and our waiter was very knowledgeable about the menus and wines. Management checked in on our table more than once making sure we were taken care of. We were looking at an Argentinian wine. Our waiter suggested us to take a chance on a Uruguayan wine, after all we were in Uruguay.... His selection exceeded our expectations, certainly if one looks at a very friendly price point. We order Bife de Chorizo (*New York Strip Steak/Entrecote) and Bife de Lomo (*Tenderloin) Both cuts were generously portioned, prepared azul (*rare) and well seasoned. An absolute sensation in the mouth! Our ensalade mixta was prepared table side and very flavorful. Our desert selection was delightful and accompanied by a wine he described as Half&Half, a slighty sweet balanced by some tartness creating a perfect balance. Our visit was very enjoyable and upon return to Montevideo we surely will visit again! Highly recommended!

This place is an icon, you likely don't need much inspiration or motivation to check it out but make sure you do. First off, the place is huge, which can be a benefit or a hindrance, depending on your perspective. We stopped in for lunch and sat at the bar, right opposite the huge grill pumping out smoke, ash and fire as meat of all descriptions sizzled. It was heaven. The service was all over the place, not sure if we offended the staff or his was playing with us but a few things weren't available. Namely, the seafood my pescatarian partner was chasing. Still, what we did manage to have was simply outstanding. Easily the best meal we've had in Uruguay, maybe in South America. Excellent wines available, too. This place will stay with us, and not just clogging our arteries with love 😘

Skip this place. My steak was crunchy with too much salt, and they never even asked me how I wanted it cooked. The portions were also tiny, small handful of fries given to me. Has the rent costs gone up lately? To add insult to injury the service was non-existent. It was on a Monday at lunch with absolutely no one else around and the staff are acting like I am a huge inconvenience, I even speak Spanish so there was absolutely zero language divide. A lesson needs to be learnt in customer service and a bit of empathy. I’m not saving my hard earned money to travel half way around the world to be treated like an idiot and to pay for a Uruguayan steak that is soooo crunchy with salt that I can’t even taste the meat. Not once did anyone check in on me either. Please take this warning, go somewhere else nearby. I had Cabana Veronica’s (next door) the other day and that was spectacular. Service top notch and double the amount of food at higher quality and much higher service. Avoid El Palenque at all costs

One of many restaurants located in the "Mercado del Puerto". I think it has a nice atmosphere, sitting at the bar (they charge less cubierto here - $80 p.p.) and watching the master chef at the grill is like show cooking. For sure it's expensive! It's one of the most touristic places you can go as far as I know... Nevertheless they serve juicy & tasty meat. It depends where are you from and what price structure you are used from home if you think it's super expensive or fair for what they serve.

Excellent dinner in Montevideo. They had a few vegetarian options, and the paella was very good. My husband had the picaña and enjoyed that a lot. Said it was cooked perfectly. The flan with dulce de leche was outstanding, and is made on site. Prices are a bit high but I have found that is pretty standard in Montevideo. It is located inside the port market. We went Sunday around 4pm and by the time we left, it was very deserted in the area, so just something to keep in mind.

This is one of the places you have to go in Montevideo, even if you are a local. The poeple that come here have one thing in mind, meat, glorious and tasty meat in a good wood fire. You can have the whole range of meat cooked in a happy and proud way knowing you'll be amazed and wanting to eat more. Side dishes and apetizers are great. Good wine selection. Liquors ans good rums are spotted on the shelf. Give yourself a gift to the tastes and go there.
