Saturday March 5th dined here and it was not a good experience.
When making the reservation I also stated via the whatsapp conversation that I speak, read, understand Spanish. I do this since I'm Afrolatina and i would like to be treated as any other latina would be treated, i would like to be spoken to in Spanish.
I arrived at the restaurant and told the waiter, in Spanish, that I had a reservation. He told me, in English, that he could speak English, if it would make me more comfortable. I asked him, in Spanish, why would I be more comfortable with English. The waiter didn't have an answer and shrugged his shoulders. I said great, then I will continue speaking Spanish and I'd prefer you to speak in Spanish as well please. I then sat down.
Throughout the night the waiter would repeatedly speak to me in English and then say that he forgot. I noticed he didn't forget to speak to the Latino couple in Spanish and the Portuguese couple in Portuguese, but with me he continually said that he forgot. At no point did I speak in English with him and at no point did he say he didn't understand me in Spanish.
I asked him why he kept forgetting , is it because I'm black, and he asked me where I was from. Not that it was any of his concern, but I was born in Panama (central America) along with the rest of my family and although being raised in the usa, am living in peru. I told him my biography shouldn't matter , I've been speaking in Spanish the whole night and he hasn't forgotten with the other patrons around me, who happen to be white.
I asked for the lamb to not be red on the inside but not overcooked please. But it came to me with crispy edges and chewy, either it had been overcooked or was a bad piece of meat. I then asked for my bill and requested to speak with a supervisor.
The chef said the waiter spoke to me in English because of my last name. So my name could be a married English name, but my last name has nothing to do with the experience that night, since I never stopped speaking Spanish .
Then the chef said I wasn't speaking good Spanish, so now the insults begin, ok. Again, the chef is saying this all in Spanish and neither he nor the waiter ever said they didn't understand me. There was no need for the chef to be rude to me. I asked the chef if i was treated this way because I'm black and the chef said they work with black people, but it's clear they don't respect black people who come into their restaurant to spend their money, or he wouldn't have thought to insult me.
When I arrived back at my hotel, a person who identified themselves as the owner, messaged me via the whatsapp account I had made the reservation through and asked what happened. I sent him a voice note, in Spanish, and he responded saying that they spoke in English because of my American phone number on whatsapp.
If you're still reading, i wonder if you've counted the many excuses as to why i was spoken to in English when latinos present, white latinos were spoken to in Spanish.
I asked the owner if he understood my voice note and he said of course. I told him that the chef thought it was a good idea to insult me and the man told me that he understood that the conversation had gotten heated. But I never insulted anyone nor the restaurant, so why was i insulted by the chef.
The owner asked if I would return the next night and join him for dinner. I declined, I had already wasted my time and money on uber rides, dining there, and didn't want to waste another night, especially after being insulted. I had given them my time and money and I was given an experience less than other latinos received that night and that's not cool.
I would suggest afrolatinos or black people in general refrain from visiting this restaurant and go somewhere where your hard-earned money is respected, where you are treated as another white Latino, white fluent Spanish-speaking customer, with respect...
Read moreA splendid date night with tango, love and food. You need to reserve the place beforehand. It's not like normal restaurant to go and dine in. Nice fine dine experience. Waiters speak in When we reached they gave us welcome drink - a wine with chocolate and canela. Then we got breads with humus. As my girlfriend is vegetarian she communicatied her preference and dietary restriction to waiter. They usually call you before you go to the restaurant to know your preferences.
Then they served 3 apptizers. Once served they explain each and every thing there. Type of chips(green apple, crackers etc) and 5 dips. (Both vegetarian and non vegetarian options) Mushroom dumplings with 3 types of mushrooms, mushroom powder, croutons and mushroom soup. Bone marrow with bruschetta (In vegetarian they gave provolone cheese and herbs)
In main course we had lamb with red wine and beetroot sauce and pumpkin. And in vegetarian options, mushroom lasagna and vegetables.
As desert you can choose multiple options. I had one with quency fruit and other one with muffin.
The best experience is tango. The music, dance, the atmosphere - spectacular. Really amazing. Please visit and enjoy the evening. A hidden gem in...
Read moreWe went there on 10th march 2023 and had a really enjoyable experience. The food was good (3 entries, main and desert) and the chosen tannat (3 vine option) was to my liking. The live singer, live musicians and dancer fitted in the whole scenery to this museum- restaurant. We were fascinated by the tango show! The waiters and the service were friendly and it was a pleasure to came to your place. Thank you, we enjoyed it from the beginning to the end.
PS: I ordered the steak as medium but it was served more like done (slightly pink in the thickest part). It’s Uruguay (here they like it well done) so I expected something like that. maybe it was just a miscommunication (still- the English of the waiter was flawless and perfect 👍).
Overall we were really happy to chose this location for our last dinner in Uruguay after 4 weeks. The pricing equals the quality and experience in every way. I would recommend this restaurant for everyone interested in Tango, music and delicious food with an special setting...
