This a public square (plaza) built to honor Bruno Mauricio Zabala who founded the city of Montevideo back in 1700s when he was a Viceroy representing the Spanish crown

The Plaza itself was not established until 1890!when the equestrian statue was installed. But it was not until 1931 when the Plaza was officially inaugurated.

The plaza is notable for its old trees.

The equestrian statue is rather unusual because at base are sculpted a representation of an Uruguayan family with its notable cow, and another representation is the Gaucho and his flock.

La Plaza Zabala, ubicada en Ciudad Vieja, es un espacio verde encantador que combina historia, arte y un ambiente peculiar. Su belleza radica en sus esculturas bien conservadas, la abundante vegetación y los numerosos bancos que invitan a descansar y disfrutar del entorno. Es un lugar muy visitado tanto por turistas como por locales, aunque también es común encontrar linyeras, lo que puede generar cierta incomodidad, pero no le resta encanto al lugar.

Un punto a destacar es la zona de hamacas, pensada para que los niños también puedan disfrutar del espacio. Sin embargo, lo más inusual de la plaza son, sin duda, sus rejas. Con una forma bastante particular que recuerda a un pene, han dado lugar a diversas historias y mitos sobre su origen, algunos más graciosos que otros. A día de hoy, la verdadera razón detrás de su diseño sigue siendo un misterio, por lo que si alguien la conoce, sería interesante saberla.

En definitiva, Plaza Zabala es un sitio con historia, naturaleza y un toque de excentricidad que la hace única. Vale la pena visitarla, ya sea para un paseo tranquilo o simplemente para descubrir sus...
