Being vegetarian in Vietnam is effortless, no matter your budget. To start, an impressive mock meat dish where bean curd mimics chicken, both in texture and appearance. It brings a mild chew and layered texture, pairing well with the white onions and laksa leaves for a fresh herbaceous touch. Each bite is held together with a light, slightly acidic dressing that's refreshing, along with the crunchy toasted rice crackers. Using bean curd for mock peking duck is ubiquitous in Vietnam, as golden crispy tofu skin contrasts with the soft, bouncy gluten beneath. Its mild flavour is amplified by the salty Peking sauce, and then toned down with the fresh veggies and thin pancakes to create layers of flavour. Finally, lion's mane mushrooms are my favourite for their unparalleled ability to soak up flavour like a sponge. The food was the best I've had in Ho Chi Minh and I've been here twice.
We got the battered shitake mushrooms (pictured) as an appetiser, they were cooked perfectly, the batter lovely and crunchy, the sauce complimented it well. We also got the vegan ribs which were melt in your mouth delicious, the best vegan meat I've ever had. I got the miso mushroom udon noodle soup, everything tasted fresh and cooked just right. For dessert we got the banana ice cream (pictured), which was not creamy like you would expect, but more like a layered chunky slice. The coconut felt a little too frozen, but once it melted a bit it was great, a wonderful way to end the meal.
This place is a must go especially if you are...
Read moreI am not a vegan and stumbled upon this restaurant not far from the Old Post Office/Notre Dame Cathedral. Wow, I am glad I did. I ordered the Vietnamese Sour Soup aka Canh Chua Nam Bo with a side of rice and a bottled water. The soup was flavorful/delicious and consisted of okra, tomatoes, pineapple, mushrooms, throut, and cilantro.
Service was very good, the outside and inside of the restaurant is inviting/nice decor.
Total bill came to 136,000 VND or about $6.50 USD with tip.
This was my first meal in Ho Chi Minh and it was a great start to tasting the Vietnamese cuisine.
Update: I returned to this restaurant two additional times during separate trips to Saigon and it's my favorite restaurant in Vietnam--the food is that good. This, after eating and traveling for over a month via motorcycle throughout Vietnam--and I am not a vegan or vegetarian, although this restaurant is...
