The first craft beer bar in Vietnam, widely recognized as “Pasteur Street Brewing Company”, opened its doors in Ho Chi Minh City in 2015 and is credited with sparking the country’s craft beer revolution. Located at 144 Pasteur Street in District 1, this pioneering taproom introduced a unique blend of American craft brewing techniques with local Vietnamese ingredients, creating beers that stand out for their bold and innovative flavors.
Ambiance and Setting: Tucked away in a cozy alley just a block from Ben Thanh Market, Pasteur Street Brewing Co. offers an intimate, laid-back atmosphere. The original taproom is small but vibrant, with a mix of indoor seating and a charming rooftop bar next door. The decor is simple yet modern, often adorned with brewing equipment and local touches, making it a welcoming spot for both locals and tourists. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable, happy to guide newcomers through the beer menu or recommend food pairings.
Beer Selection: Pasteur Street is renowned for its creative use of local ingredients like jasmine, passion fruit, dragon fruit, lemongrass, and Vietnamese coffee. Their flagship Jasmine IPA is a crowd favorite, often cited as Vietnam’s best-selling IPA, with floral notes that balance hoppy bitterness. Other standout brews include the Passionfruit Wheat Ale, which bursts with tropical freshness, and the Cyclo Imperial Chocolate Stout, a rich, indulgent option at 13% ABV. With over 200 brews since its inception, the taproom offers a rotating selection, ensuring there’s always something new to try. Beer flights are available for sampling, which is perfect for exploring their diverse range.
Food and Pairings: The food menu complements the beers beautifully, featuring bar snacks and small plates like fried, grilled, or smoked meats that pair well with the bold flavors of their brews. The use of local ingredients extends to the food, enhancing the authentic Vietnamese experience. Visitors often praise the ability to enjoy craft beer alongside Vietnamese cuisine, a nod to the country’s communal drinking culture.
Pricing and Value: A pint of craft beer at Pasteur Street typically costs between 100,000–150,000 VND ($4–$7 USD), which is pricier than Vietnam’s iconic bia hoi but reasonable for the quality and creativity. The taproom’s central location and innovative menu justify the cost for craft beer enthusiasts.
Overall Experience: Pasteur Street Brewing Co. set the standard for Vietnam’s craft beer scene, blending global brewing expertise with local flair. Its intimate vibe, exceptional beers, and friendly service make it a must-visit for anyone exploring Ho Chi Minh City’s nightlife. Whether you’re a seasoned beer geek or new to craft brews, this taproom delivers a memorable experience. It’s no surprise that it’s expanded to multiple locations across Vietnam, including Hanoi and Saigon, and remains a benchmark for other breweries. Highly recommended for a taste of Vietnam’s craft beer pioneering spirit.

Read moreWe just had our reunion with our extended family from USA/EU/VN two weeks ago and it was my wife and I first time meeting the entire clan. Everyone had a great time thanks to the amazing atmosphere and customer services from the team at Pasteur street. We could not have ask for a better experiences in our first gathering of the trip. They were also flexible with our last minute time change from 17:30 to 21:30 due to the prior group tour running longer than expected.
Lynn help setup the arrangements so we practically had the entire floor. We needed it since we were a bit loud and proud of our heritage. He recommended their four best-selling towers (3-liters each) for our group of 15-18 beer-tasting enthusiasts. Age range from early 20's to 60's. I am partial to Jasmine IPA since it definitely unique in VN.
I visited the craft house before in my prior trips to HCM and wanted to setup something special for my extended family. Location was convenient since most were staying nearby @Sherwood Residence. I clearly made the right choice and everyone had an absolutely delightful evening. My cousins are still thanking me for it.

During my visit, I had the chance to try the Cycle Stout Rum Barrel Aged, and it was outstanding. Rich, complex, and beautifully balanced, it had deep notes of dark chocolate, roasted malt, and a smooth, warming rum finish that made it an absolute standout. While this was the only barrel-aged beer available at the time, the quality was top-tier, and I can only imagine how good their other barrel-aged offerings must be.
The atmosphere is relaxed and inviting, with a cozy upstairs space perfect for enjoying a cold pint away from the hustle and bustle of the city. The staff is knowledgeable and friendly, making great recommendations based on personal preferences.
