Fantastic food and coffee! We’ve been travelling the region for two months and were happy to have a taste of home for a little while.
The menu has great lunch and dinner options but we came for breakfast every morning. They have all the classic breakfast dishes, including some very healthy choices. Some people complain about the prices, but considering the superior quality of the food, good portion sizes - we thought it was very worth it.
And, honestly, let’s be real for a moment. As Canadians (and this applies to Americans, Brits and most Europeans) the excellent food here costs a fraction of what the same dishes of equal quality would at home. We’re happy to help support a quality business and hopefully good pay for the staff. The cost of our excellent, filling breakfasts for two with two coffees averaged VND 265 (CDN $14.60)
The one thing worthy of note is that this is an open air restaurant. While it is sheltered from wind and rain, it would not be a comfortable place to eat if the weather is cool.
We really like the coffee here. The matcha latte is rich and balanced. We were happy to get a nice double espresso Americano with fresh milk and raw sugar on the side so we could fix our coffee to our personal liking. The chai tea is the real thing, quality tea leaves with spices. We did feel it had a bit too much star anise and not enough cinnamon or cardamom.
The french toast is excellent quality, served with tasty honey and a delicious tropical fruit salad.
The oatmeal pancakes were perhaps the best we’ve ever had - there’s so much oatmeal in them we wonder how they managed to get the pancake to hold together. The pancakes are thick, with a crispy, almost caramelized outside - it was crazy good. We ordered it with Nutella and Bananas, but next time might ask to have them plain with just some honey on the side.
The Bun Bo Hue is also the best we’ve ever had. This is a breakfast noodle soup that originated in Hue and has gained fame all over the world with foodies. This is an absolute must try!
English muffins with fried egg, bacon and spinach were generous. They come open faced with runny yolks, a little bit of caramelized onion, some seasoned mayo and a little bit of tomato relish in the side. The three egg omelette was beautifully cooked and filled with crispy, rich ham and a slice of good quality cheese melted on top.
Their onion rings are very tasty - crispy, good sweet onion, not greasy. They needed a little salt, and the staff was happy to provide it.
The nook burger is glorious -beef patty, cheese, egg, bacon, carmelized onion. The beef was so juicy and flavourful. We liked that it wasn't too big a burger, and that despite all the ingredients, the bun held together till the end.
The pho was nice - lots of rice noodles, homemade broth, good beef. We would have liked to have hoisin and soy to add to it. It was a little flat tasting until we asked for some salt which improved it significantly.
We’ll be back each morning...
Read moreI love Vietnamese food, but sometimes you get a hankering for something more familiar. This very comfortable place well marked down at the end of a cozy alley did not disappoint. And that was even after I braved a bit of a rain storm to walk here. That can give you an attitude like it better be good. lol And it totally was. I started out with a frozen margarita. It was surprisingly authentic compared to what I’m used to in Florida with a nice salted rim and wonderful flavor. I especially appreciated that there was no wasteful single use plastic. It came with a metal straw. Good for you guys. I have watched the challenges that plastic waste is bringing to your community and how it makes its ways into your beautiful moats and and rivers. I applaud your wisdom. There were many things on the menu that tempted me, but they ended up going with a good old-fashioned cheeseburger that came with french fries. It was cooked through, which is important to me and very very tasty. I would recommend that you don’t need to go quite as heavily on the sauce and perhaps consider adding lettuce and tomato. I loved the little pickle on the bamboo skewer. Having been on the road for many months that is a special flavor for me that I’ve missed. The little dish of coleslaw was also a very pleasant surprise and well done . I ate every single bite of everything. You’ve done a great job creating an atmosphere that makes tourists feel comfortable while also embracing a lot of local flare. I especially love the big bunches of fish traps hanging from the ceiling. They are so beautiful and I’ve seen them represented in so many ways around your country, but it took me a while to figure out what they were. Handmade things with practical purpose, but also intense beauty. I also love your generous use of live plants. My server, Moon, did an absolutely fantastic job. She doesn’t even need to be quite as attentive as she is, but it was very appreciated. She watched closely to make sure that my every need was met and was very sweet and likable. A wonderful representation for your beautiful Imperial city as well as...
Read moreWhere to begin? When ever we are hunkering for some great burgers and fries, we think of nook every time. Honestly ever since moving to Hue we ask ourselves "where do you wanna eat today?" nook is the first place that comes to mind. Great food, great atmosphere and of course great staff.
They have a first floor and a second floor. When we were there a few days ago on the second floor they pulled away the roof like a convertable car and we could see the whole sky! It was such a vibe that we were there for a few hours! The boss Maika remebers us since we go there so much and we always feel welcomed when we come in.
If you were in the mood for breakfast, even in the afternoon. Nook gots your back since they have breakfast till 5pm! Im always craving some waffles or pancakes at such hours. Did I also mention the presentation of the food? A work of art every time! Its hard for me not to take a picture of the food when it comes out to us. If you want to take picture perfect photos to post on instagram this is the place to do so.
Like I said we feel so welcome when ever we come in. We come so much everyone remembers us now. When ever we see Lotus or Duck we have nice conversations with them. There is never a dull moment at nook. Its a good place to get some work done while having a good meal. Its a nice escape from the loud tourist area, since they play calming music like at a massage parlor. So if anyone is in the mood for vietnamese or western food I 100% reccomened coming to Nook to fufill your...
