I noticed the Le Gecko while strolling around Sapa's beautiful lake area. I took note of its beautiful colours and exteriors, and later had a look at the breakfast menu. It's so hard to come across vegetarian options in Vietnam, so I was delighted to find vegetarian combos for breakfast, still called pétit déjeuner here. For breakfast the next day, I made a beeline for this pretty restaurant with lake views. Le Gecko has beautiful aesthetics. Its dark maroon colours, dark furniture and beige walls, give it a charming old-worldly, much-loved uncle sort of appearance. The café is on two floors. The higher floor has clearer views of the lake, but the ground floor has a quaint feeling of sitting in one's own living room, so I preferred sitting on one of the comfortable sofas with a centre-table like antiquish piece. The service is warm and friendly, unobtrusive yet attentive. I ordered a granola combo for breakfast. It came with a huge bowl of crunchy granola and six different kinds of fruit, fresh yoghurt and Vietnamese milk coffee. I loved the colours and the presentation. The taste of both the granola bowl and the coffee was like a dream. After this sumptuous breakfast, I couldn't resist ordering another Vietnamese coffee. Le Gecko's coffees are a must try, though they've a wide variety of other beverages - hot, cold and iced. The café accepts cards without any extra charges, so that's an additional advantage if you're a traveller fed up of the bank's extortionate...
Read moreWe decided to eat at La Gecko in Sapa because of its high ratings on Google and its reputation for having the best egg coffee in town. The service was great, and the staff even asked us to leave a review about their service. At the time, we didn’t think much of it, but looking back, we realized this might be one reason for their high ratings—guests are encouraged to review right away, before they’ve had the chance to fully assess their dining experience.
Unfortunately, a few hours after our meal, I started feeling unwell and developed symptoms of food poisoning, including severe diarrhea and dehydration. My condition didn’t improve the next day, and during our trip back to Hanoi, I was still feeling weak and fatigued. We had planned to explore the city before our flight, but I was too unwell and had to stay in the hotel to rest. I also developed a low-grade fever, which made traveling even more difficult.
Overall, this experience really affected the rest of my trip. I’d advise others to be cautious when dining here. High ratings can be helpful, but they don’t always tell...

What really stood out was the egg iced coffee and egg hot chocolate — both absolutely divine and beautifully presented with creative latte art. There’s a good range of drinks, snacks, and meals available, all reasonably priced, making it great value for money. Whether you’re dropping in for a coffee or spending time soaking in the atmosphere, it’s a spot worth returning to.
