The first thing that struck me when I stepped off the train was how cavernous and bright the platform felt, main part of the station contains both a platform level and an elevated central concourse yet even on the second level the ceiling is still considerably high up. I had known for months that the station would be like this, but hearing about it and seeing it firsthand are two different experiences. It’s easy to forget you’re underground until you have to ride the three escalators to reach the surface.
I admire the modern, organic design of the platform and concourse including the tunnels to both the main and secondary exits which while not as open and spacious as the main platform still are still far from the narrow claustrophobic ant tunnels of other Sydney stations. The bright colours and thoughtfully integrated lighting further enhance the illusion of being above ground. I’m also a fan of the polished stone surface used for the platform, likely local granite or some other rock, though I’m not a geologist, so I could be wrong, but it looks great.
The design of the second level concourse is another standout feature; I’ve always felt that exposed concrete can look appealing when used correctly. It’s impressive how the platform accommodates two different levels while still feeling so spacious. Overall, this station is a masterful example of both architecture and engineering, proving that Australia is more than capable of building train stations that are not only functional but also...
Read moreVictoria Cross is a metro station on the M1 Metro Northwest and City Line, soon to include the Bankstown Line. It has 2 platforms and 3 exits out of the station. Platform 1 is served by trains towards the CBD and Sydenham, while Platform 2 serves trains towards Chatswood and Tallawong. The station is very accessible, with lifts at the 2 southern entrances, and a lift only entrance further north. The northern entrance, in particular, can get very crowded during the afternoon, as many school students from many different schools, such as North Sydney Boys High School, travel to the station to get home. Overall, the station has good facilities, with toilets being available in close proximity to the station. The only thing bad about the station is that the northern entrance is a lift only one, but it makes sense to the limited space there and the fact that the entrance was added after the station was opened. In short, Victoria Cross is a very good...
Read moreMade it from Chatswood to Victoria Cross (North Sydney) in five mins. Very impressed. The station is efficient, clean and new - not surprising as it just opened.
However, not impressed with the fact that the Metro trains are single decker carriages meaning more commuters have to stand during a journey which is not a positive - regardless of how fast the train goes.
I'm also on the fence about the whole driverless trains. Something about that didn't fully sit...
