The Donnerbrunnen, or Thunder Fountain, is a historic fountain located at Neuer Markt in the 1st district of Vienna, Austria.
The Donnerbrunnen was built in 1737-1739 by the Austrian sculptor Georg Raphael Donner. It was commissioned by Emperor Charles VI and originally stood in the center of the square.
The fountain features a central column adorned with sculptures representing the four known continents at the time: Europe, Asia, Africa, and America. At the top of the column is a statue of the Greek god Jupiter hurling thunderbolts, hence the name "Donnerbrunnen" which translates to "Thunder Fountain."
In the 19th century, the Donnerbrunnen was moved to its current location at the northern end of Neuer Markt. It underwent several renovations and restorations over the years to preserve its historical and artistic significance.
The Donnerbrunnen is not only a beautiful work of art but also holds symbolic importance, representing the power of the Habsburg monarchy and the interconnectedness of the world through trade and exploration during the Baroque period.

According to the information (by Lonely Planet), it was first installed in 1739 by sculptor Georg Raphael Donner, and replicated in bronze in 1873, this intricate fountain depicts Providentia, the Roman goddess of destiny, at its centre, foreseeing water supplies for Vienna. Surrounding it are the male figures of Traun (with a trident) and Enns (a resting ferryman), representing Upper Austria's rivers, and the female figures of Ybbs (carrying a jug) and March (against a frieze showing a battle, highlighting the river's role as a natural border), representing Lower Austria's rivers.
With centuries passby, this statue is still stunning, beautiful and survived the World War 1 and 2. Surrounds by restaurants, hotels, shops and lots more. For those who are very active in social media, it is an Instagrammable place.
