I enjoy visiting Stadtpark while spending time in Vienna. During my recent visit, I was able to see the park a couple times while there was a bit of snow on the ground. This made made up for the lack of green on the trees and made for a generally pleasant visit.
Stadtpark (City Park) was the first public park to open in Vienna back in 1862. Today, it includes nice footpaths lined with monuments to Austrian composers, writers and artists as well as other interesting sculptures and wells which are spread throughout the park. The most famous monument is that of Johann Strauss, the gilded statue and allegorical configuration which has long been an iconic image of the city of Vienna.
If you enjoy Art Nouveau and Secession era architecture, the U-Bahn entrance at the south end of the park is fantastic to see. You'll also find flowerbeds, a fair number of trees as well as a small lake in the park. The lake was mostly covered with ice during my recent visit, I was surprised at the amount of waterfowl that were to be seen during the very cold weather conditions. On one busy Saturday morning there were quite a few residents there feeding the birds.
I also very much enjoy taking breakfast at Meierei, the sister restaurant of Michelin-starred Steirereck on the east side of the narrow river that transects and splits the park. Breakfast sets are beautiful and delicious, very much worth seeking out if you enjoy fine dining experiences during your travels.
On this side of the small river, there are more sculptures, a large scale art installation called Stage Set as well as some playground area for children. The river which was frozen over during my last visit is lined with what was likely a romantic walkway many many years ago. Sadly much of that area has been covered with graffiti when seen in recent years. That is the one thing I find disappointed to see...
