Church of Saint Philip of Neri — Attraction in Municipio Sucre

The rooftop is very unique and definitely a must-visit in Sucre!

❗️The entrance is through the college, which is a bit to the right of the entrance shown on Google Maps. ❗️You need to ring the bell — if no one opens right away, just wait a bit; the lady inside might have stepped away for a while. Be patient and ring again from time to time — she’ll open the door. It’s best to have exact cash ready.

♥️ The lady (who was there during our visit) was wonderful. We told her we only had 20 minutes before heading to the airport — we came right at opening time — and she immediately understood. Even though other visitors arrived at the same time, she acted so quickly, guided us to the rooftop, and gave us a short but really nice explanation. Huge thanks to her! The entrance is around the side and there is no sign. Knock on the big double doors and/or ring the door bell.

Sucre is dubbed as the White City of the Americas and it's easy to see why. Standing atop of the bell tower on this 17th century building overlooking at all the surrounding structures, all you can see is white walls and colonial style roofs and balconies.

La construcción del convento, más conocido en aquella época como Oratorio de San Felipe Neri, se inició al concluir el siglo XVIII impulsada por el Arzobispo de La Plata el carmelita Fr. José Antonio de San Alberto, quien financió la misma, colocó la primera piedra el 19 de marzo de 1795 y dió el ejemplo a sus feligreses cada domingo de subir al cerro Churuquella y retornar con una piedra al hombro como material de construcción. La iglesia es sencilla de una sola nave, mientras que el claustro tiene planta cuadrada y está rodeado por dos niveles del corredor con arquería, es generador del espacio al patio colonial más importante y bello de la ciudad, donde destacan los arcos construidos en dos niveles, con sillares de piedra vista y remata en las torres y tambor con linterna en la cúpula.
