The good:||||Our double room in the back was spacious with a table and couch. The music was not too loud in the room during the party nights.||The patio in the back reserved for guests is pleasant for hanging out during the warm parts of the day. At night it was dark and cold there.||The shower was hot and had good pressure.||They allowed early check-in because the room was free at the time. The receptionist was nice during check in.||The breakfast is included in the price and itâs a big buffet.||||The bad:||||The private rooms in the back have some strange curtains which donât cover part of the windows. Besides getting a bunch of light in the morning, these windows face a patio where some shared bathroom is located, so anyone can look inside. ||||This takes me to the highlight of our unforgettable stay at Kultur Berlin:||||In one of the nights when the hostel club was open, as I was returning from the street to our PRIVATE room before midnight, I found security peeking through our window. My girlfriend was in the room at the moment, with the lights on!||||After some rude sloppy excuses about the need to make sure no one is drinking outside alcohol or taking drugs in the rooms, they actually came in and searched everything in the room (including our backpacks, pockets and wallets).||||After finding nothing to confiscate, this guy tried to harass us about an empty beer bottle we had in the room, insinuating it was smuggled from outside. (I wish it was, but we had actually bought it in the afternoon, for 28 bolivianos at the expensive bar downstairs)||||This was a completely unacceptable violation of our privacy (and probably illegal). It never crossed my mind that we would ever find ourselves in such a ridiculous situation, especially in a hostel which is more expensive than the average in Sucre, and recommended by Lonely planet. We were treated like kids on a school trip.||||We got no apologies, nothing. ||||A quick search finds other reviews online regarding the obnoxious behavior of the security staff, and obviously nothing has changed since then. One has to assume that the hostelâs management sees such kind of behavior as acceptable treatment of their guests.||||We would never come back to this hellhole. I recommend you donât either, unless you donât mind sleeping in a place where security behaves like they are in some...
Read moreWhere to start⌠We were knocking on the door for 15 min before the night receptionist answered (supposed to be open 24/7). I had to pay a late checkin fee of 30 Bol (which the next day was proven to be wrong but was not returned). Was not given a key to my dorm Not one bed in the dorm was decent. Each mattress was uses to the max. I felt like I was laying on a hobboâs mattress that was thrown away 3 years ago. Waking up I made my way down to the breakfast buffet, served from 08:00 till 09:30. At 09:00 everything was basically gone. I was fortunate to eat 3 pieces of fruit. Refill? No sir. Since I arrived at 01:00 I did not have time to shower so I did it the morning after. I rented a towel, took a shower and was ready to dry myself off. When I unfolded the towel the inside was full of dirty spots, boogers and hairs. Meh⌠I am not one to accept such poor conditions, even if itâs an hostel. When I confronted the next receptionist he did initially help me. I got a better bed and there was some kind of an apology Since I basically had no breakfast I made my way to the Palacete del Guereo (recomandation). As I was enjoying my brunch, I received a message from the hostel I was no longer welcome for the second night⌠Why? Because I said I would write a review exactly as I experienced my stay. Was it my fold for being to honest? Perhaps, but then again I am Dutch being in a supposedly German hostel. So, to make a long story short, would I stay here again? No. Even though itâs cheap I felt an amazing warm welcome at Casa de Huespedes Isabella, which is just around the corner for a whole 2⏠extra. Private room, double bed and a lovely host. Also have a look at rooftop-bar El Purgatorium. Amazing view, delicious cocktails and a great staff. Fairly priced of course. I have never written such a long review but I wanted to let you know....
Read moreI feel indignant on behalf of my capital city! Berlin merits better than having its name used for this place. After all, you can say about it what you want but Berlin knows how to party. This place might want to but doesnât. We came here twice because of the free salsa class and were disappointed both times. The first evening the waitress told us that the date changed, while the poster with the wrong date was still hanging in the entry hall. The second evening was worse. The waitress told us that there would be a dance show before the salsa class so we ordered a drink and waited. (Btw we ordered drinks five minutes before happy hour, which the waitress of course didnât mention.) I canât decide what was worse: the drinks or the show. I donât want to be mean, so I wonât go into detail, but I have to say that I suspect a strategy here. After all, our group of four ordered a lot of what might have been the worst drinks of my life to make it through the show. When it was finally over, we didnât see the salsa class starting. We asked the waitress who told us it would begin at any moment. Ten minutes later I asked another waitress who told me that the class already started. I didnât see anything happening, so I asked again and only when I insisted did the waitress tell us that the salsa teacher actually left during the show and wouldnât come back. While I canât blame anyone for fleeing the show, I also wasted two evenings and money waiting for a salsa class that never happened. And the waitresses even tried to hide this until the last minute. What a rip-off!
PS: Berlin is a great place to eat vegetarian food, something that is unfortunately lacking in the menu of...
