Take the 5.5 Mile Drive up Tunnel Mountain on Tunnel Mountain Road.
Tunnel Mountain Drive begins in Banff at the intersection of Banff Avenue and Buffalo Street. Follow the loop road for 5.5 miles where it rejoins Banff Avenue. Get out of the car at the viewpoints to more fully enjoy what you are driving past. Several view points include Bow Falls, the Fairmont Banff Springs Hotel, Mt. Rundle, and the Bow Valley. The hoo-doos are here. The traffic is slowed down by conservative speed limits, but watch for people out and about. Tunnel Mountain Road goes past the Tunnel Mountain Campground where two of the Red Chairs look out at the mountain itself. Stop there and take a photo, and then check out the Red Chair Project.
The Tunnel Mountain Hoodoo Trail is a short paved pathway that climbs gently so it is suitable for strollers or wheel chairs, so that everyone can enjoy this. There are some railed viewpoint platforms which have nice views of the Bow River Valley and the Hoodoo Formations. There is signage which will tell you about the Hoodoos. The trail begins in the parking lot on the south side of Tunnel Mountain Road, east of the Tunnel...
Read moreBeautiful summit. Easy depending on your physical state. I have a knee injury and was able to Summit with my hiking poles and at a reasonable pace. So don't be ashamed to bring your poles, save your knees. There are several viewpoints, including the famous Canada Parks red chairs. When you get to the summit, just keep walking, and you'll get to the Viewpoint towards Mt. Rundle, on this side of the mountain, apparently there are mountain climbers, so don't throw stones. I've seen babies, kids, dogs, and cats in this hike. This is the most popular hike in Banff. The Trail officially starts at the second trail head, but you can make you hike longer by hiking from Grizzly St....
Read moreAmazing hike! The beginning starts a bit steep for the novice, but afterwards it gets pretty manageable. We see different demographics of hikers when we went. Young and old, even with dogs. The only complain I would have is that it can get pretty crowded on peak hours. Some people don't give way on trails that are on the side of the mountain. The proximity of it in banff centre is what makes this hiking trail attractive. There are a few fenced spots that are great for photo ops, please follow the signs! Avoid climbing over the restricted area. It's placed there...
