A steady and relatively easy hike up Tunnel Mountain for beautiful views overlooking the town of Banff and the surrounding mountains. It is conveniently located a short drive away from the town of Banff. The total hike time can take between 1-2 hours round trip depending on your speed and how much time you spend at the top admiring the views. As the snow and ice is now melting, the trail was very muddy and wet over the weekend. Watch your step not to slip and don’t walk too close to the edge - it’s definitely wise to wear proper shoes for this type of condition.
The road leading to the trail parking was closed, so we had to park at lower head trail and hike uphill to the start of the trail head (adds about 10-15 minutes to the hike time). The parking lot was easy to find using google maps. Will definitely come back again when looking for somewhere close to...
Read moreTunnel Mountain is a short and scenic 4 km hike to an amazing viewpoint on top of the mountain overlooking the town of Banff and surrounding scenery. I visited in August 2017.
The trail began from Tunnel Mountain Drive in Banff. It followed along long, nicely graded switchbacks along the side of the mountain through the forest. Some of the switchbacks were steeper than others and some of them leveled out which provided a chance to catch your breath. There were some glimpses of the views along the way through the trees.
The best views could be seen from the top of the mountain at the end of the trail. There were some bare rocks surrounded by forest which were perfect places to sit and admire the views overlooking Banff and the surrounding mountains and valleys. It was beautiful!
Would recommend this short hike for a good leg workout and opportunity to see...
Read moreThis is rated as one of the easiest summits in Banff, with a 2km switchback trail from the upper parking lot to reach the summit. If you aren't a regular climber with hills.....it isn't going to feel easy. It was a good hike up and the switchbacks keep it from being too steep, but this is a constant upwards go, and from the lower parking lot it is even further. But the paths were fairly wide, only became rocky near to the top, and were definitely climbable for all sorts of levels of fitness. We took several breaks on the way up, often to marvel at the view, and enjoyed the climb and the experience. Climbing it in September it was not too busy, though the upper parking lot was full and it is clearly a popular hike. If you are in Banff and want to be able to say you climbed a mountain this one is a good one to do and the views are...
