Time: 3PM. Movie: Avengers Infinity War.
I'm downstairs purchasing a ticket for the 3PM movie at lunch time. The machine does not work properly and every time I move to pay for my ticket, I'm told payment is not accepted. I move to the next automated ticket machine to my left: Worked (finally).
It's 2:45 now and I'm in the concession line waiting to purchase a drink for the movie. The floor is sticky, the area is poorly lit, there's no atmospheric music and staff have the demeanor of humans that resent being replaced by robots and give management every reason to finish the job (a likely consequence of a high turn over rate and hiring children over adults).
There's a creepy 60-something year old disheveled man behind me that keeps peeking around my shoulder at the pre-teens infront of me and giving me this look like a dog asking for permission to eat a treat. The poor lighting does not lend well to this already uncomfortable situation.
I'm at the concession counter now. No greeting. I'm not needy, but really, common courtesy is appreciated. I greet the concession staffer, place my order and holy crikey. A drink that costs half the price of admission. Well, at least they give me a free refill that I'll never use because I'll be damned if I'm going to get up during the movie to refill my drink. They know this and it's why they offer it.
The poor guy cutting the tickets is constantly being bombarded by movie-goers with questions about the movies while trying to ensure the tickets are validated. It's an annoying distraction while I'm trying to get in to sit, but whatever.
The theater is pretty full. I sit down in the recliner with my softdrink which is probably the best part of this entire experience. The seat reclines, but the foot rests have clearly seen better days. The rests do not raise level, so your legs are at an awkward angle while watching. I thought, "meh".
The man next to me smells like beer at 3PM. I don't know if he's intoxicated. He seems friendly enough, so let's just watch the movie.
It's an hour in and the movie is unfolding as it should when I smell something peculiar. I'd gotten used to the beer smell. This was not beer. I was clearly smelling the pungent odour of stinky feet. I turn to my right and low-and-behold, the beer man has no shoes on. What's more, he's asleep!
I thought, maybe he wants to see the movie he paid to see. I've been exhausted in the theater before and wouldn't want to miss something I paid to see. So I nudge him to help him out. No response. Okay. I'm not pushing it.
The movie ends with the beer feet sleeper completely oblivious to any of it. I couldn't be bothered sitting through the credits. As I'm leaving the theater, staff wander around like the lost souls in a post-apocalyptic drama.
If this theater is losing money it's their own fault. People pay money for an experience. This was not an experience worth the price of my softdrink, much less the price...
Read moreThis was our first visit to a Landmark Cinema after usually going to Cineplex VIP. We’d heard a lot of praise and wanted to try it out, but the experience was a bit of a mixed bag.
Negatives: The theatre felt a bit neglected: escalators weren’t working, the small concession area was overcrowded and messy, and the toy/plush displays in the concession line looked disorganized and cheap. The bathrooms were in rough shape, with most of the fixtures broken and visible wall and tile damage everywhere. Some theatre seats were worn or peeling, though ours were in good shape. Audio bleed from neighbouring theatres was very noticeable. This theatre does not appear to have the "Premium Seating" features like heated seats, tables, privacy dividers etc.
During our showing of Lilo & Stitch, there was a lot of disruptive behaviour—people talking loudly, kids crying and complaining, and even someone taking flash photos. I completely understand that it's a kids’ movie and expect some noise, but the issue was really with the lack of parental supervision or care for how it affected others.
Positives: Free underground parking with validation is a big bonus, especially in bad weather. Ticket prices are much cheaper than Cineplex VIP, and concessions were $10–$15 less. Staff were friendly, helpful, and gave great combo recommendations. Theatre layout was spacious with wide aisles, and our seats were comfortable and clean.
Final Thoughts: Overall, not a terrible experience, but the theatre clearly needs some renovation and attention. With major blockbusters like Thunderbolts (May 2), Final Destination: Bloodlines (May 16), Lilo & Stitch (May 23), and Mission: Impossible (May 23) all coming out, I expected the theatre to be in better condition and more prepared for high traffic.
Take this with a grain of salt — I do think this location has potential, it just needs some investment. Personally, I’ll probably stick to Cineplex VIP for now, as the quieter, cleaner, and more premium atmosphere feels worth...
Read moreSERIOUS SECURITY ISSUES HERE!!! I was at Wicked's 6 pm screen yesterday. Everything was ok until I heard loud reactions from the back seats. I thought it was weird, but then it got stranger. All of a sudden, a lady sat next to my seat. I said, "Okay, somebody is super late for this movie, but whatever." Then she started talking to herself :( And it's my nightmare because it was the same situation of talking to herself that I usually come across on the bus. Anyway, I was still trying to focus on the movie. Then, a couple of guys from the landmark team came to the room and were looking for someone. I got the situation at that point. Anyway, they couldn't find the lady easily, though. I wanted to wave my hand to show them the lady was there, but I was scared because she might react. But I was still trying to make eye contact with any of them to see me. They finally understood and found the lady. Then, security came. And security tried three different times to get the lady out. I guess she hasn't paid either for her popcorn or not a ticket. Anyway, finally, they managed to take her out. Then, they apologized for this inconvenience, rewind the movie, etc. I just don't understand one thing. How did this lady manage to come in? Where were the ushers and security before she entered the room? This shows a considerable security problem there, which I think they need to be extra careful about, especially at a theater in Jackson Square. Btw, even I waited for the usher to show up, I thought, "It's weird; why is no one around?" So, a more dangerous person than this homeless lady might even come in quickly. They definitely failed, and I don't think I will go...
