The Marine Museum and the Alexander Henry (an imposing and magnificent Coast Guard Ship) are tributes not only to Kingston's history on Lake Ontario but to all the cities/towns on all of the Great Lakes.Over the years, as my grandsons grew from small boys to young men, we greatly enjoyed climbing onto the Alexander Henry and pretending that we were sailors out on one of the Great Lakes. Additionally,we were awed by the collection of maps, pictures, paintings, historical papers and other Great Lakes memorabilia that are protected in the museum. With the passing years my grandsons and I came to fully realize the importance of the Marine Museum in protecting the history of the Great Lakes. Now with great sorrow I have to tell my grandsons (who live in the US) that they will no longer be able to visit their friend ,the Alexander Henry, when they make their annual summer visit. The loss of the Marine Museum and the Alexander Henry is a tragedy for all of us who live in Kingston and who are proud of Kingston's history and a tragedy as well for all of those who visited the Marine Museum and the Alexander Henry as children and who want to visit the museum and ship with their children/grandchildren.So,if you are visiting Kingston before August 23rd 2016, a visit the Museum is a must before its doors are...
Read moreThe Great Lakes Museum is a "must" for anyone living in or visiting Kingston. It is a unique experience full of fascinating details and priceless memories. We visited with friends from out-of-town and all of us were mesmerized by the unique spaces and the stories the spaces told. It is an amazing museum that transports the visitor into an emotional era. Reading the information on the exhibit panels before the tour helped to put what we saw into perspective in advance of boarding the ship and is highly recommended. Our guide, Liam, made the tour very enjoyable with his calm, clear and detailed explanations of historical facts and enthusiastic story-telling. It is one of the most interesting museums we have visited and we will be talking about the timeless treasures and unique memories the S.S. Keewatin stirred up for a...
Read moreFascinating place. It's best appreciated by people with a penchant for history and ancient machinery. Well informed and friendly staff. The star of the museum is the Keewatin. It's a rare insight into Edwardian luxury passenger ship travel. The ship tours emphasize the similarly to the Titanic in terms of accommodation and travel experience as both ships were build and outfitted in similar ways, for a similar purpose, although the Keewatin is one-tenth the size. However, as there aren't any other Edwardian cruise ships left, the Keewatin is a unique experience. It's expensive. Two adults cost $124 for a complete museum experience. I'm encouraged our admission goes towards the continuing restoration and preservation of the historic vessel. Public parking is available one block west of the museum Street parking is...
