This is a very famous shop in Sheung Wan! If you live in Hong Kong, you've probably heard of this place, introdcued by Andrea below. I came here to try their specialty toast. That day, I was extremely busy at work and had to skp lunch. So by the time I arrived at the restaurant, it was already after 3pm. Apparently, most people visit this restaurant with family or friends, and very rarely do people come here by themselves. As I was dining alone this day, perhaps the staff felt bad that I was by myself, but they gave me an egg tart on the house! Now, for the actual food. Since I was extra hungry that day, I ordered a dish from their special menu, in addition to the toast. The noodle dish was topped with ham, sausage, and roast pork, but it was nothing like the image on the menu. It was nothing like what I was expecting, which was disappointing, and it did not taste very good either. I ended up not finishing the noodles, and decided to order 2 types of toast insead. They lady who took my order was very kind and suggested I order the mini-size of the french toast (since she thought I had ordered more than enough for one person). The first toast dish was filled with scrambled eggs, which was absolutely delicious! It had plenty of volume, and I thought that it was quite filling by itself. Now, for the famous french toast! Rumor has it that they only serve this from 2pm-5pm... But the heavenly sweetness that fills your mouth is totally worth it! Bottom line, their toast dishes were all very delightful. Since my hotel is very close to the restaurant, I'll probably be back again soon. When I was paying my bill at the end, they showed me a picture they took with a famous Japanese magazine editor who had visited the restaurant in the past. I left feeling very satisfied (in my belly and my heart), that they were willing to share this happy memore with me. Next time, I will deifnitely bring a...
Read moreHoi On Cafe is a very traditional local cafe in Hong Kong. It has a long history as you can see from its entrance and interior design.
I found this interior design heart warming, as it brought back so many happy childhood memories when I dined in similar traditional local cafes when I was small.
I came for this signature thick toast as a grand breakfast, and it definitely did not disappoint!
It’s actually thicker with more toppings that the one shown on the menu! I am never a spring onion lover, but these chopped spring onion on the toast were unavoidable and so delicious, so I ended up finishing all. The scrambled egg was so smooth, and the minced beef was just salty to the right point. I was suggested to sprinkle some black pepper on top, but I found it unnecessary as the spring onion already did the flavoring job. This toast was surprisingly filling that I didn’t even need...
