Our favourite in Dubrovnik!
Don’t miss this great opportunity to learn all about the years of socialism in Croatia, and have fun whilst doing so! We absolutely loved this place. The information is laid out succinctly and easy to understand. It gives you a very good understanding of socialism in Croatia - both the good and not so good.
Set in an old factory, the museum and exhibition is fully immersive and interactive - feel at home in a 1960s Yugoslav apartment, open kitchen cupboards to reveal objects and information, listen to music, sift through wardrobe and the clothes of the era- you really feel like you are transported back in time.
They also have a funky library and bar serving ice cold beers, cocktails and traditional soft drinks, and playing decent music - the best we heard on our stay in the city. And the museum shop is selectively stocked and reflects the exhibition, with great prints, t shirts and even face creams! Very cool.
We were surprised to find out that the museum is a private family run venture, set up without government support, which has obviously taken a lot of time, love and investment to get off the ground.
It is a perfect thing to do to escape the summer heat for 2-3 hours for the cost of a drink. We left feeling very grateful and...
Read moreEasily in my top 5 museums-- EVER! Love the layout of everything. First, you are given some really informative history of Yugoslavia, history of Tito, and of the Soviet movement in general. Next, the museum becomes almost immersive in a sense. You are introduced to a traditional home, a recreation of a staple home. You can almost imagine the family in this home, trying to survive the flames of totalitarian communist rule. You are free to open doors, taste candy, touch clothes, smell perfumes, and even play with children's toys from that era. Every door you open has a placard with a compelling story of what people's lives were like back then. My parents lived through life in the USSR back in the days of communist rule. All the stories they taught me, being a first-gen American, were brought to life again in this museum. The end of the museum features an exhibit depicting the personal stories of different Croatian people living through that time. My wife and I left inspired. Inspired to learn more history and do what we can to never let it repeat itself. If you keep an open mind, you will...
Read moreRed History Museum in Dubrovnik is an absolute gem, offering an immersive and educational journey into the past. The museum brilliantly encapsulates the essence of communism, aiming to foster a comprehensive understanding of life under this regime in Yugoslavia.
The array of items on display, coupled with informative articles, videos, and interactive images, creates a rich tapestry of historical insight. Our visit was incredibly enlightening, providing a deep dive into the daily lives of people during that era.
We spent around an hour exploring the exhibits, though visitors are welcome to take as much time as they need. There’s a wealth of information to absorb, making every minute worthwhile.
The owner’s friendliness added a personal touch to our experience, engaging us in fascinating discussions about the communist party in Greece. We even walked away with a handful of unique souvenirs.
