Staying in Český Krumlov for justa few days means catching up with all the wonderful places no more than in the vicinity of Latrán and the inner city. So on the way back home after 1st trip it was clear to me that I had to return and to do so very quickly. And there are so much remarkable places to visit around the town: Rožmberk town and castle, Kleť hill, Zlatá Koruna monastery, or Dívčí Kámen castle ruins. But the closest to the city, and therefore my first destination, is a remarkable hill with a baroque pilgrimage site, which is almost always in sight as you roam the magical streets of Krumlov. It is only less than two kilometers from the center, but the elevation gain is almost 150 meters, so it is a pretty good fitness walk.
Around 1650, the Jesuit preacher Michal Koppe erected the so-called Spanish wooden cross on Křížová (cross) hill with an embedded particle from the Holy Cross. It should protect the city from bad weather and natural disasters. Ten years later, a small wooden chapel was also built. One local burgher decided to establish three stops of the Stations of the Cross to the chapel. It was later replaced by stone statues and eventually six brick, plastered niche chapels. A walk from the center to the top of Křížová hora is a very pleasant glow. Even if you are not interested in all that, from the top you´ll be rewarded with a beautiful view not only of Český Krumlov, but also its surroundings and the adjacent...
Read moreSuper cool place to visit in Český Krumlov! There are multiple paths up the hill, but the easiest would be just to take the cobbled path to the left of the chapel, if you're looking upwards towards the top. The views are spectacular over the city, and if you so choose, you can go into the chapel. They ask for a donation because its maintained by a man and his wife, they get no outside funding aside from the donations that they collect at the door. The day that we went the cellar was open, and we got to go down inside and it was pretty interesting being in such a historical place. If you play the piano, there is a keyboard inside the main chapel prayer section where you can showcase your skills, and you're welcome to play songs for everyone! Very easy hike up the hill if you're physically able and its worth it to just sit up there and look out over the medieval town, bring some...
Read moreThis is not a hike. Just 200 meters of a dirt road, the rest is paved and well illuminated. You should come here in the night, at least when the sky is clear. You have an outstanding view of the Milky Way and is a good stargazing spot, obviously. Plus we saw the dystopian star-link train in the sky, what was quite interesting. I recommend going when the sun sets. Might be good to bring a lantern with you (phone's light is enough), just because the last 200 meters of the way has no light. If I knew it was such a nice spot I would also have brought some snacks and drinks to spend more...
