The Old Castle Stairs are one of Prague’s most historic approaches to the Castle, offering a charming yet challenging climb. The views as you ascend are rewarding, but be prepared — the staircase is long, steep, and physically demanding, especially after a day of walking the city.
The structure itself remains largely untouched, which preserves its authenticity but also poses risks. The uneven steps, lack of modern handrails, and cobblestone sections can be difficult for frail or elderly visitors, and a fall here would be serious. It is a climb best tackled with care, sturdy shoes, and patience.
That said, the history embedded in every stone is undeniable, and the sense of walking a path centuries old is part of the magic. While not modernised or convenient, the Old Castle Stairs remain a living testament to Prague’s medieval spirit — challenging, authentic, and unforgettable for those prepared to...
Read moreThe Old Castle Stairs might be a bit of a workout, but they’re absolutely worth it! As you make your way up toward Prague Castle, the views of the city just keep getting better and better. It’s one of those walks where you have to stop every few steps—not just to catch your breath, but to take in the incredible rooftops, spires, and the Vltava River below.
Along the way, there are usually street musicians adding to the atmosphere, which makes the climb feel almost magical. Our treat were pigeons with their feathers combed in odd directions. I didn't hold them myself, but I did snap a pic of someone doing it.
By the time you reach the top, you’ll feel like you’ve earned your castle visit! And if you need a break, there are a few great cafés nearby to grab a drink and...
Read moreIn Prague, the Old Castle Stairs (Staré zámecké schody) are one of my favourite climbs — romantic, historic, and a surprisingly good workout. The stone steps lead from Malá Strana up toward the eastern gate of Prague Castle, giving you strong views over the city rooftops and a sense of going back in time. It’s great for a run, walk or just a moment of pause — but watch out: you’ll meet tons of tourists along the way, so it’s not the quietest path. If you bring a stroller or small kids, be careful — some sections are steep and the steps are uneven. The setting is unique: climbing up the hill, the city below, the history around you… definitely a place for memories. Interesting fact: The staircase’s current form was largely established during the reconstruction...
