This towering statue on top of a building depicts Fray Antonio de Montesino, a Spanish Dominican friar from the early 16th century, giving a passionate sermon about the mistreatment of the Taíno by the Spanish. Montesino supported the abolition of slavery and did not allow slaveowners to give confession, which angered colonial governor Diego Colón. The government forced Montesino and the other Dominican friars to return to Spain. Montesino worked with Bartolomé de las Casas to convince Fernando II to pass a law protecting indiginous people in the Carribean. The modern statue stands about 18 meters (26 feet) high and is located within Consejo Judicial Centroamericano y del Caribe [Central American and Caribbean Judicial Council].

Fray Antonio de Montesinos monument is a museum located at Calle Arzobispo Portes No. 120, Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. It was inaugurated in 1983 after having been donated by Mexico a year before. This representative monument is one of the key points of the George Washington Avenue. He was a Spanish Dominican friar who preached against the enslavement and poor treatment of the Dominican Republic's indigenous peoples.

This is actually one of my favorite monuments in Santo Domingo. It is grandiose and a bit out of place, but the artistry and dramatic execution easily surpass anything negative. It is a beautiful place to watch the sunrise, and the monument really captures something. I cannot say it accurately represents Friar Antonio, but it certainly speaks to the spirit.

A must see place! It’s been totally renovated and modernized! It honors a Dominican friar that is credited in advocating humane treatment at hands of the greedy and ruthless Spanish conquistadores. Antonio de Montesino was the first international human rights activist in the new world. Too bad the Spaniards still wiped out the entire population of the Tainos, at...
