Mayersche Aachen — Attraction in Aachen

It's the largest bookstore I have visited so far. 4 levels full of books, graphic novels and mangas, toys and games, seating and gastronomy. The initial experience was fantastic, well structured signs direct you to the floor where very polite floor staff are happy to help in a friendly manner. I found the subjects and titles I was looking for and could have ordered any out of stock book at the info points for delivery both to the store pick up or directly home. With a load of books that bent the table top of the café I was allowed not only to browse the book indices but also to read full chapters to make up my mind. On my way to the checkout, another member of staff asked if she could take those books I wasn't going to buy back to the shelves for me. Unfortunately, the checkout lady was as polite as a cranky bulldog whose tail was kicked. She was not only unfriendly to a child trying to spend his pocket money with the help of his early teen sister, she was outright rude and inpatient despite three other maned checkouts were open for the few customers at that moment. And she wasn't better with me. On scanning the books (value 96 Euro) she declared that the price labels on the books were incorrect and I would have to pay 102 Euro or leave the ones with higher prices than the ones tagged on it. Mentioning customer protection laws and directing to the supply chain professionals of GS1 to get their pricing right, she referred to the German and Austrian Buchpreisbindung and again in a very rude manner demanded that I pay or leave. I paid, left with a very angry feeling, and was friendly thanked for the purchase by another staff member on my way out. This calmed me down enough to ask for the store manager who went out of his way to set the record right. Not only did he apologise and confirmed my rights as a customer, but he also offered to go back to the checkout and refund the overcharge or to give me a voucher for a later purchase. And he nit only gave me the book vouchers but also 3 money off vouchers for the gastronomy section of this marvellous temple...

Well, wherever I go, I have a constant need to find I bookstore - no matter what kind of joint it is. This one though, is remarkable one. Stumbled here by an accident , wandering down the streets; although is located in the center of Old Town Aachen. Mayer´s 4 floors serves an outstanding collection of books and book appliances (notebooks, pens, gadgets as well as souvenirs). One easily finds itself browse trough magazines, books, hundreds of journals, diaries, writing instruments and all kinds of funny little stuff you can imagine. Most of the books are naturally in german, so the international section is not too versatile. But I was stunned how the place gathered all sorts of people: old, young, couples, tourists, book lovers and especially families with small kids. Mayer has created a family-friendly space worth mentioning. One floor is mostly dedicated for children to play and spend time. It also has books and toys targeted at them. The complex has astonishing 3 cafeterias, all of them almost full at any time (visited here in three different occasions). The top floor café - that has also an outside terrace - was packed with students studying. Couldn´t left this place without shopping. Would have loved to sit and read, but the task was impossible due the amount of people. Be there on the opening hours if you feel...

Dreck, dreckiger, Kinder Welt in der Mayerschen Buchhandlung in Aachen. Es begann alles so wunderbar und schön. Alleine die Gestaltung war schon der Wahnsinn: Bunt, durchdacht, mit viel Liebe zum Detail. Ein Kinder und Eltern Café wurde und wird nach wie vor dringend gebraucht in der Aachener Innenstadt. Und zumindest die KinderWelt in der Mayerschen Buchhandlung konnte man eine lange Zeit gerne aufsuchen. Damals, als dort noch Tische für Kinder standen und die Getränke direkt dort an der Theke serviert wurden. Doch dann kam Corona und nichts wurde wie es einmal war. Heute ist die KinderWelt, oder was davon übrig geblieben ist ein trauriger Anblick. Und es macht mich persönlich sehr traurig, dass dieses Etablissement nach wie vor das einzige ist, was man mit Kindern in der Innenstadt aufsuchen kann. Die Kindertische sind fast verschwunden. Ein einziger ist noch übrig geblieben, meist vegetiert er irgendwo in der Ecke vor sich hin. Getränke bekommt man an der leerstehenden Theke schon lange nicht mehr und die übrige Einrichtung hat mehr als gelitten. Die meisten Bücher sind zerfledert oder sehen zumindest so abgenutzt aus, als ob sie dort schon zehn Jahre im Regal stehen würden. Warum das so ist, erkläre ich kurz und bündig. Eltern bringen fünf Bücher mit aus dem Geschäft in die Kinderwelt um ihre kleinen Racker dort etwas toben zu lassen und sich dann für die Bücher zu entscheiden, die man mit nimmt. Der Rest wird einfach dort liegen gelassen. Nun kommen die nächsten Eltern, unwissend, dass es sich nicht um Bücher handelt die man wie Dreck behandeln kann (weil sie aus dem Geschäft sind und nicht aus dem Regel in der KinderWelt, die von der Mayerschen gestellten Bücher haben einen speziellen Aufkleber drauf) und nehmen sich dieser an. Oft reicht ein, manchmal sogar zwei Nachmittage und diese Bücher können nicht mehr zurück in den Verkauf. Und so landen diese Dann auch im Regal der Verdammnis. Denn hier erwartet sie kein ordentlicher und guter Umgang, nein. Hier werden sie irgendwann bis zur Unendlichkeit zerfledert und dann entsorgt. Die Möbel in der KinderWelt sind meistens dreckig. Auch der Boden ist oft nicht gewischt und voll mit Chips und Brötchen Resten, die leeren Getränke Falschen und Behältnisse werden meistens einfach an der Theke abgestellt, in der Hoffnung, dass sich schon jemand darum kümmern wird. Müll wird oft nur halbherzig oder gar nichts aufgehoben. Es wird auch nicht aufgeräumt, was die eigenen Kinder an Spielsachen und Dreck hinterlassen, dass wird dann auch schon jemand anders für einen erledigen. Das Bälle Bad ist ein Molch an Sand, Dreck und Schmutz. Die Bälle selber verdecken das ganze ganz gut, aber wenn man ein mal was darin suchen musste und dort mal selber hinein gegriffen hat, der weiß wovon ich spreche. Die Kunstpflanzen in den Kübeln sehen um einiges besser aus, als die echten Pflanzen, die in der Ecke hinter dem Bälle Bad vergammeln. Ein Stück der Metal Leiste auf den Stufen zum Bälle Bad hat sich gelöst und steht bereit für einen Unfall mit dem Bein, Arm, oder sonstigem Körperteil eines Kindes. Es ist schwer zu beschreiben, wie man sich fühlt wenn man sieht wie sich manche, wenn nicht die meisten Eltern und ihre Kinder hier benehmen. Aber das zeigt mir mal wieder wohin es geht mit der Gesellschaft. Man kann nicht von den Mitarbeitern erwarten, dass sie dass alles in Ordnung halten und den Menschen die die KinderWelt auf suchen ständig hinterher putzen. Es muss jedem der dorthin kommt klar sein, dass man es nachher genau so sauber, oder besser sogar noch ein bisschen sauberer hinterlässt. Ich würde mir wünschen, dass die KinderWelt weiter offen bleibt und wieder glänzt, aber ich habe nicht immer Lust hinter allen anderen aufzuräumen, auch wenn ich das oft mache. Ich füge Bilder hinzu, damit sich diejenigen die guten Gewissens hierher kommen möchten gewarnt sind. Diese Bewertung geht auch an die Mayersche Buchhandlung....
