It is a striking and serene landmark right in the heart of Berlin. The cathedral’s unique circular architecture and large domed ceiling set it apart from most traditional churches — it feels both modern and sacred at the same time. The atmosphere inside is peaceful, inviting quiet reflection whether you’re religious or simply there to admire the design. Currently undergoing restoration (as of 2025), the exterior still impresses, and the historical significance of the site remains palpable. Even with parts of it closed off, the surrounding area — including Bebelplatz — offers a beautiful setting to pause and take in the city’s layered history. If you’re exploring central Berlin, especially Museum Island or Unter den Linden, Sankt Hedwigs-Kathedrale is absolutely worth a stop — for its architecture, its cultural importance, and the quiet moment of calm it provides amidst a busy capital.

It is an 'okay' interior because I can't find the tabernacle, which supposed to be the main reason of our attention in the church. I was excited to see the result of renovation, but it didn't turn up as I expected. I feel like entering a parliament building, honestly 😅 although I can't say the design is the worst, but just missing the point of a church, which invites the 'warmth' and sparks the beauty through ornaments, and the biggest thing missing is the Path of Cross and I am really sad that this cathedral seems not having it (or maybe I missed the look?). That is a huge mistake 🥲🥲 In the term of design, I am not really a big fan of it and I know how big the potential of this cathedral is.

The Berlin version of the Pantheon. Frederick the Great authorized the construction of the first Catholic church in Prussia after the Reformation in 1743. He had just conquered Silesia from Austria and wanted to appease the Catholic population, which is why the church is also dedicated to Hedwig van Andechs, the Silesian patron saint. The church was built between 1747 and 1773 to a design by Georg Wenzeslaus von Knobelsdorff. Since 1930, the cathedral, a Basilica Minor, has been the seat of the Archbishop of Berlin. In 2018, the church was closed for major restoration. So it will be a while before the church can be admired from the inside again.

The building was modelled on the Pantheon, but the sanctuary takes an “in the round form” which is in fact a modern post-war renovation which seems well adapted to the original building design. More stark, spare, beautiful, and effective 20th century modernism can be seen in the castings and plaques in the lower level chapels. It will seem reminiscent of Scandinavian modernist craft.

It needs to be understood that all of this work took place in the time of the DDR when the regime was trying to intimidate church flocks out of existence. I remember vividly that in St. Hedwig's on Sundays, men in ill-fitting leather jackets, the de-rigeur garb of the times’ government thugs and flunkies, with little understanding of the course of the mass, would sit in the last row and photograph people.

Knowing this, the people who attended mass defiantly exhibited no fear.

One Sunday in 1982, I remember that I got so annoyed by these men that I remained standing while the parishoners were seated, knowing that it would grate on the identity-gathering VoPo or Stasi men sitting right behind me.

Today, we can forget about all of that, and can report that one can exercise faith freely. Attending a youth mass there recently, hearing the beautiful music the kids were making, I thought about how wonderful it is that they never had to know what it...

Very sad to see the interior of this church. The exterior is grand and beautiful but the newly renovated inside is austere in the extreme, bland, cold, completely white and stripped of any ornamentation. A church is supposed to be warm and inviting, to make one feel the presence of God, to inspire, to remind us of the magnificence of the Kingdom of God. A place to feel close to God. This church looks and feels like the cafeteria from a dystopian sci-fi prison movie. This renovation exemplifies what is wrong with The West and the current direction of The Church. Afraid to be who we are, afraid to boldly declare we are a Christian civilization and country. In the name of "inclusion' this cathedral has been stripped of any indication that it is a Catholic church at all. And guess what, no young people at all in the sparsely attended Sunday service. What does that tell you? Other Catholic churches in Berlin are full on Sunday and attract many young people as parishioners as well as alter-servers. I would go as far as to say this was intentionally designed to alienate people and to hasten the decline of the church. At any rate, it looks like you FAFO...well done. I feel bad for the priests who have to be assigned there. Our family will most definitely never return to...
