The Staatsoper Berlin, also known as the Berlin State Opera, is one of the most prestigious opera houses in the world. Located in the heart of Berlin, the opera house has a rich history and has played a significant role in the city's cultural life for over two centuries.

The Staatsoper Berlin was originally founded in 1742 as the Royal Court Opera, and it quickly became a center of musical and cultural life in Berlin. The opera house has undergone several renovations and changes over the years, including being destroyed during World War II and subsequently rebuilt in the 1950s.

Today, the Staatsoper Berlin is home to a resident company of world-class singers, conductors, and musicians, and it presents a diverse range of operatic works, from traditional classics to contemporary productions. The opera house also hosts a variety of concerts, recitals, and other musical events throughout the year.

In addition to its artistic programming, the Staatsoper Berlin is known for its stunning architecture and design. The opera house features a grand neoclassical façade, a grand staircase, and a majestic auditorium with seating for over 1,300 people. The stage is one of the largest in the world, and it is equipped with state-of-the-art technology and equipment to enable spectacular productions.

Over the years, the Staatsoper Berlin has played host to many famous artists and performances, including some of the greatest singers and conductors of the 20th and 21st centuries. It remains one of the most important and celebrated cultural institutions in Germany and a must-visit destination for anyone interested in classical...

The building has very nice looking architecture, also placed in one of the best neighbourhoods in Berlin for tourists. The interiors are nicely decorated. The prices of the various operas are also accessible to everyone, especially if you are a student. The beverages sold inside, however, are definitely too expensive: 2.5 cl of water costs 4.5 euros, which you can't even take with you in the main hall as it is a glass bottle. Security and services at the entrance are ok, kind but not too much. The seats aren't super comfortable and there is not much room for legs.

I've watched the magic flute and I'm a bit disappointed. This version of the opera Is very modern, with interesting references to modern culture ( Tamino costume is inspired by AstroBoy ), but it's missing something. Most of the spoken dialogues are pre-registered ( i.e. Tamino's voice) while some of the actors speak in real time. That doesn't blend too well. The singers are ok, but their voices are not as powerful as you would expect. Having bought the tickets at a discount price I'm happy with my experience ( I was in the first row of seats in the right wing on the first floor, so I had a perfect view ), but if I paid for one of the seats at full price, I would be very unsatisfied.

The orchestra was, however, VERY good: 5...

Absolutely disgraceful experience at Berlin State Opera – discriminatory and unprofessional staff

On June 29, I attended the ballet Gods and Dogs at the Berlin State Opera. I am currently six months pregnant and was shocked by the way I was treated by the staff near Parkett links | Tür B and C.

I was approached three separate times by staff because I was drinking water from a glass bottle — despite the heat and my clearly visible pregnancy. Meanwhile, several people in front of me were drinking wine from glass goblets, completely undisturbed by staff.

When I asked why a pregnant woman cannot drink water while others are allowed to enjoy wine, I was told there are no exceptions. Apparently, exceptions are only made for Germans drinking wine. When I pointed out the obvious double standard, staff repeatedly insisted there was no one drinking from glass goblets and tried to make me feel like I was imagining things.

No alternative (like a paper cup or plastic bottle) was offered — only repeated pressure to leave the auditorium.

This experience was not only humiliating, but deeply disappointing coming from a world-class institution. Treating a pregnant woman with such disrespect, inconsistency, and hostility is utterly unacceptable....

I suggest you really like modern German opera before you get tickets here. There was a woman who got tickets after us and was so excited she asked us to take a photo for her with her ticket. If fact they really liked it, after the performance the German audience gave 3 ovations to the cast. The last one was a standing ovation. That’s how much they loved the performance. Maybe something was lost in the translation, but the story wasn’t too interesting for us. Oh, yes there is an English translation board above the stage. Bring your glasses if you plan on reading it. The coat check is free and you can get your stuff quickly because the opera house is very small. I suggest getting seats at the balcony and opt for a seat at the center and the front even if it’s on the 3rd balcony, rather than a side seat at the rear of a lower balcony. All the center seats were sold out in our performance. We got the front row on 2nd balcony rather than last row of the 1st balcony.
