We had high hopes stumbling into the AMPELMANN Shop Unter den Linden. With its Berlin-themed merchandise and photo-ready installations, it seemed like a must-visit spot for tourists. Unfortunately, it became the setting for one of the most hostile and humiliating customer experiences weâve had anywhere in the world. If this is all youâre going to read, i highly recommend for you to give this store a miss â thereâs much more to see and do in Berlin!
Hereâs what happened: While taking a photo at the storeâs replica Berlin Wall display (a cut-out specifically designed for tourist engagement â see other reviews) my friendâs jacket accidentally caught on one of the thin metal plates positioned behind the wall and it made a sound. There was no damage and we were immediately concerned.
Instead of approaching with professionalism or even basic courtesy, a male staff member marched up and barked at us that the plate costs 129 euros, it says do not touch and itâs not funny.
We were stunned but in the moment I stood firm and replied that we too didnât find it funny?? We had been laughing before the incident because we were enjoying our visit, but the moment the sound happened, we too were alarmed. To have our concern met with accusation and hostility was not only unwarranted but it was deeply offensive. Like seriously who in the right mind would be yanking out a display anyway?
Worse still, the staff member abruptly walked away mid-conversation, refusing to engage further. No effort to clarify. No dialogue. Just a public reprimand and total dismissal.
Letâs talk about the real issue here. If this âŹ129 plate is so fragile that a jacket can disturb it, why is it placed in an unprotected, high-traffic photo zone? And considering the staff member had the price memorised, itâs clear this has happened before. So why hasnât the store taken any measures to prevent it â no cordons and no guidance?
This reflects a serious lack of accountability and design foresight. The store actively encourages tourist interaction, yet punishes customers for engaging with its displays exactly as intended.
We left the shop immediately, abandoning our plans to purchase. Not because of the plate, but because of the utter lack of respect and decency shown to us. It was a moment that left us feeling publicly shamed, dismissed, and deeply disrespected.
To the storeâs management: This is a reputational risk. Your staffâs behaviour was utterly unacceptable. Your layout is flawed. And the burden of that poor planning is currently being taken out on your customers. Perhaps itâs time to retrain your staff in basic customer interaction and implement physical safeguards around fragile installations. You are in a city known for its culture and hospitality and this was neither.
To future visitors: There are plenty of wonderful places to shop in Berlin. Avoid this one. Unless you enjoy being scolded, embarrassed, and blamed for the storeâs own...
