Visit this museum for the architecture not for the exhibition
The architecture of this museum is breath taking. Especially the area where the excavations took place and which is beautifully incorporated into the building. Amazing. The museum itself is also great. However the exhibition is completely unclear. A mix of a few (emphasis on few) old catholic artifacts, very nicely displayed, and modern art. The modern art felt to me like things my grandchildren could have made. The 'machine' looked like an amateuristic effort to show demonstrate some physical 'law'. I found it childish as well and neither beautiful or impressive in any way.
There were no descriptions accompanying the artifacts and the yellow booklet was not adequat to understanding what was on display and why. The haute couture drawings were nice, but what are they doing in this episcopal museum.
On entering the museum there is a museum shop with many postal cards on sale, suggesting these were pictures on display. That is not the case. Also no price information was available for the cards.
So a mixed review, but still I recommend visiting this museum for its architecture. If you do not want to go into the museum do visit the small chapel on the side of the building, Madonna in den Trümmern. On the collage picture you see the chapel from within the museum, the...

Read moreSo surprising. We thought we were going to the museum but instead stumbled upon the church, and what an extraordinary and visionary piece of architecture it is, uniting the ruined old church with the new chapel and ancient Roman foundations.
The pierced bricks let in a mysterious light and many traditional aspects are newly interpreted. Then to the actual museum which is also an extraordinary building, huge clean asymmetric rooms, with carefully placed medieval and modern pieces of art. The modern pieces didnt resonate with me, but i loved the ivory crucifix, carved wooden narratives from the new testament etc, altarpieces.
This church and museum should be much better known....
