Due to the renovation the MAKK only had a small exhibit, hence the reduced admission fee. I liked the small exhibit 'Kunst + Design im Dialog', which was worth the €4. It made me want to come back and revisit the museum in the future after the renovation. The museum makes use of an app that you can download on your smartphone and use as a free audio guide. That worked really well. So overall a thumbs up for the MAKK.

What dampened the experience was the attitude of the people working at the museum. Aside from the elderly lady working the cloakroom who was very friendly and hospitable, everyone came across uninterested and bored.

Even though there are cameras everywhere it felt as if they were stalking us. This was worsened by the fact that they didn't interact with the public from saying 'hi' or maybe engaging in brief conversations about the experiences of the visitors at the MAKK.

The worst experience was someone barking down (from two stories up) to get off the round red carpet where a Classic Mercedes was displayed. This guard-like behavior, was illustrative of a bigger organizational culture problem among the people in visitor facing functions at MAKK, which, I believe, management of the MAKK should address

To me as an outsider it was almost as if there were too many people for the tasks at hand, boredom of the people, and no genuine interest of the people working there to act as a host of what could potentially be a great museum experience.

Maybe the lady at the cloakroom should reveal her secret to the others and...

They don't accept foreign (non-german) payment cards, so you have to pay cash. In the 21st century! The permanent applied art exhibition shows many well known design items, very worthwhile. I also went to see the Künstler Blick special exhibition. The exhibition was on the second floor behind a small unmarked door. I suggested to a guard to put an Entry sign, he said if people don't know the place, they can ask downstairs for directions... The special exhibition was small and eclectic; I'd recommend it only for people with deep interest in the local art scene. Good: The exhibition booklet is very detailed. Bad: it is not obvious which description in the booklet refers to which exhibit. How about putting numbers on the exhibits for identification? Overall, I recommend the permanent exhibition; the special exhibition was somewhat interesting but let down by not being...

The Museum of Applied Art Cologne (MAKK) 🙌is where the captivating history of design comes to life. Here, you can marvel at the evolution of furniture, from the groundbreaking works of Richard Riemerschmid and Bruno Taut to the stunning modern design icons. In the "Art + Design in Dialogue" 😍department, you'll be thrilled to see how art and design beautifully influence each other, resulting in innovative industrial products. The vibrant examples of pop art and radical design will dazzle you and make you rethink traditional ideas about furniture. 😮‍💨🤍 One of those museums that I would recommend visiting if you come to Koln for a couple of days💯
