My partner and I were visiting Cologne, Germany for the first time and were excited to try the famous “German apple strudel.” Sadly, our experience at this restaurant was nothing short of a nightmare, and we left feeling frustrated and disrespected. We ordered the apple strudel, along with a coffee and a mint tea. From the moment our order arrived, things went downhill. I politely asked the waiter if we could get some extra sauce with the strudel, as the portion of sauce was extremely small. Her response was shocking—she bluntly said “no” in a rude tone. When I asked for an explanation, she walked away muttering, “I have to add it as an extra and ask the kitchen.” We waited for about 10 minutes without knowing if she had even asked the kitchen, so I decided to go inside and ask the bartender myself. To my surprise, another staff member chimed in and rudely said, “He already asked for it before,” repeating it several times as if I was being unreasonable. All this while, our food had gotten cold and we still had no extra sauce. Then, things took an even worse turn. When my partner started drinking her mint tea, she noticed white bugs floating in it! Completely disgusted, we asked the waiter for a replacement. Her response? “I don’t see anything, we wash these.” She dismissed the issue entirely, despite the bugs clearly being in the tea. We have attached a picture of the tea, trying to capture the bugs—while it was hard to get them all on camera, we did manage to capture one. Trust me, there were multiple, and it’s not just dirt, although it may seem that way. At this point, I also asked again about the extra sauce we had requested over 20 minutes ago, and she rudely replied, “What am I supposed to do about it?” That was the final straw. I asked to speak to the manager, but after waiting another 15 minutes, the manager never came. What’s even more frustrating is that no one ever bothered to apologize for the inconvenience. Instead, the same waiter returned, saying her manager was “too busy” but had heard her side of the story. After some back-and-forth, the waiter reluctantly agreed to remove everything from our bill except the coffee, but by then the entire experience was ruined. The service here is absolutely terrible—the staff are rude, unprofessional, and completely dismissive of their customers. They not only ruined our meal but also soured what was supposed to be a pleasant day in Cologne. We will never return to this place, and I strongly recommend avoiding it if you want to be treated with respect.

During my recent visit to Funkhaus Café-Bar-Restaurant in Cologne, I had the chance to try two dishes, and both really impressed me. First, the truffle pasta with grilled chicken was a real standout. The pasta was cooked perfectly al dente, generously coated in a rich, creamy sauce with the deep, earthy flavor of truffle shining through. The chicken pieces were tender, well-seasoned, and nicely seared — a great pairing with the luxurious sauce. The presentation was beautiful too, with fresh herbs and shaved truffles adding a classy touch. The second dish we tried was equally delicious — a comforting plate of rice topped with a creamy sauce, capers, tender meat medallions, and vibrant beetroot slices. The combination of flavors was really interesting: the creaminess of the sauce, the tanginess of the capers, and the sweetness of the beetroot all balanced each other beautifully. It felt like a dish crafted with a lot of thought and care. Service was warm and professional, and the overall vibe of Funkhaus was very relaxed yet stylish — the kind of place where you could just as easily settle in for a leisurely lunch or meet friends for a laid-back evening. If you’re in Cologne and looking for a spot with great food, inviting atmosphere, and friendly service, Funkhaus is definitely worth a visit. I’m already looking forward to coming back to explore more of the menu!

I had a delightful experience at Funkhaus Köln, the restaurant's location is conveniently close to Cologne HBh, just a 5-minute walk away. The place itself is beautiful with artistic decor, creating an enjoyable international atmosphere. The staff was friendly and welcoming. As for the treats I ordered, the machato lattes were as expected, nothing extraordinary, but still enjoyable. The real stars were the desserts: the chess cake was the best I've had in Germany, soft, not too sweet, and absolutely delicious. The chocolate soufflé with ice cream was a delightful combination, and the cherries added a lovely touch. chocolate soufflé was fresh and served hot from the oven. While the prices were a bit on the higher side, at 28 euros for my order, I understood that it was justified given the quality of the food and the ambiance. If you're willing to splurge for a wonderful dining experience, Funkhaus Köln is a fantastic choice. However, if you're on a tight budget, it might not be the most suitable option. Overall, I highly recommend trying their mouthwatering desserts and enjoying the unique atmosphere of the restaurant.

This is the third year I’ve committed to Funkhaus Cafe while attending Gamescom in Cologne. Every year, I meet one of my clients there in the evening for drinks and that was the exact plan this year.

However, rather than the normal 2 members of my client, alongside me and a colleague, there was this year, at least 10 people from my client!

I’m very pleased to say that booking an initial table for 6 was extremely easy and once we arrived, I informed the team that there could be 12 of us now. They very quickly found us a space indoors and were kind enough to push tables together so we were all in a group.

We ordered drinks, a few beers and some of the exceptional cocktails that the team create. No bad words on those, plus we had multiple bottles of water brought to us as well.

My clients ordered some food and it was all served in good time and generally looked exceptional, especially the ox cheek (or maybe it was tail, either way it looked great).

Overall the experience here was one of pure professionalism and working as hard as possible to my mine and my client’s night enjoyable. We were frequently asked if everything was ok, or if we needed more drinks, coffee or dessert. Impeccable service.

I was very happy to tip 20% to the team for their efforts that night, though I have to draw particular attention to Tytus (I believe the spelling is right?). Tytus went over and above with his work that night and totally understood the need for things to run smoothly on a night with SO MANY individuals from my client in attendance. Many thanks Tytus, I’d have bought you a drink if you weren’t working 😂

Long story short, go here, you’ll be looked after and have some excellent...
