I woke up this morning in the cold water. Maybe I fell asleep in the shallows of certainty, or maybe the tide just came in while I wasn’t looking. Stranger things have happened. At every fork in the road, I take it; not because I know where it leads, but because standing still wastes more than being wrong.
My observations are best when I'm watching, not navigating. And usually, I'm as humble as I choose to be, which is to say: not always. I won't look back, someone might be gaining on me. Memory has teeth, and nostalgia tends to exaggerate its résumé.
I’m mostly innocent when I dream, which is more than I can say for when I’m awake. In this life, I know less than I do know. That’s the only certainty I trust. Don’t blame me for letting the truth complicate a good story. Sometimes the best way to describe my failure is to say: "The Calliope crashed to the ground."
C’est la vie... just like last time, but this time. For me, the future ain't what it use to be, but I still walk toward it. Wanting makes me feel upsidedown, so I don’t want for anything. I build. I don’t destroy. That’s the job, as far as I can tell.
Perhaps I’ve made too many wrong mistakes, but some were right mistakes. Don’t sweat the petty things and don’t pet the sweaty things. Well, I'm learnin' some philosophies are more useful than profound.
I expect someone to read this when I’m gone; then they’ll miss me. Maybe they'll finally understand: I'm not a fatalist nor a determinist. I just live like the map is inside the road.
