Ad | If you’re planning to come to Munich and not necessarily do what every tourist does, save this post.🥰 . First of all, I recommend you sleep at Mercure Hotel City Center, for example, because here you are right at the train station and can take the S-Bahn to wherever you want. In addition, @mercurehotels work on the local conditions in terms of products and style. So we had a room that was decorated with great details to a gin brand. Breakfast was killer, with pretzels, weisswurst, and a great selection of toppings and bread. The staff are accommodating and super sweet. So I can really recommend it. 🫶🏽Now for the spots: 🥨Visit the English Garden (start from the Eisbach wave and just follow the paths to the Monopteros, here you have a great view to the city. At the lake you can feed the birds and let your soul dangle. 🥨 go in the evening for a drink with cool people in the Glockenbachviertel. Here we had chosen the bar Curtain Falls 🥨 marvel at the BMW cars from new to old, as well as great changing exhibitions in the BMW World and the BMW Museum 🥨 climb the bell tower ‚Alter Peter‘ to get the best view over the city 🥨 learn more about the Munich way of life and go on the journey of beer in the beer museum 🥨 enjoy a delicious Schnitzel at ‚Atzinger‘ and an ice cream like Alice in Wonderland at the ‚crazy ice cream maker 🥨 buy delicious products at the Viktualienmarkt or let yourself be drawn into the atmosphere 🥨 follow the history of toys in the toy museum (reopened in March) 🥨 you want to immerse yourself in an authentic quarter of Munich? Then take a look at the French Quarter. Well, how many spots did you already know?☺️ . . . #DiscoverLocal @mercurehotels #visitmunich #münchenliebe #münchencity #münchenstagram #munichgermany

Frederick the Fair donated the original building on the site to the city council in 1316 and has been owned by the city ever since. It was the site of the execution of Franz III. Nádasdy on 30 April 1671 in the wake of the Magnate conspiracy. On 26 May 1848, during Vienna's March Revolution, it housed meetings of the People's Security Committee, as memorialised by a plaque on the building. Since 1871 Sankt Salvator has been in the care of the Old Catholic Church of Austria, which was founded by those rejecting the doctrine of papal infallibility, though that new religious community was only recognised by the Austrian state in 1877. The Altes Rathaus last housed a meeting of Vienna's city council on 20 June 1885, with the first at the Neue Rathaus three days later. The Altes Rathaus now houses the municipal offices for the 1st and 8th districts of the city, the inner city's local history museum (Bezirksmuseum Innere Stadt) and the Documentation Centre of Austrian Resistance. In 1893, it was the site of the founding of the Allgemeiner Österreichischer Frauenverein.

One of the interesting historical buildings to see at Marienplatz is Altes Rathaus (Old Town Hall) which is situated on the eastern end of the public square. Like many buildings in this area of the Old Town, it is worth spending a few minutes to view and enjoy the architecture of Altes Rathaus. It seems there have been town hall buildings at this location since the early 14th century. What you see today is the 1860's Neo-Gothic style building which was restored after heavy damage during WWII. The exterior of the main building is attractive and well complements the Altes Rathaus tower, which dates back to the late 12th century when if formed part of the city wall fortifications. Worth further note, Altes Rathaus tower now serves as a Toy Museum (Spielzugmuseum) and providing yet another bit of fun is the Juliet Capulet Statue , located on the side of the building. This was a gift from the city of Verona to Munich in the 1970s.

Very nice small museum dedicated to toys. Great for all ages. Entrance is right off of the main Marienplatz square and as you get higher in the museum, you have some great views of the surrounding areas. The museum is located in a tower with several floors filled with displays of toys. You can either walk up a narrow, winding staircase or take a small elevator. The Entrance fee was 6 euros for adults. I spent almost an hour looking at the various displays with most of them having English information along with the German information. There is a small souvenir shop on the ground level. The toy displays cover a number of different toy types. They mainly included European and some American toy makers. They had train sets, Teddy bears, and numerous dolls including a whole display featuring Barbie dolls. Very nice and worth a visit with or without kids.

Just about visible from Karlsplatz through the Christmas markets the Old Town Hall is located at Marienplatz (often pronounced as Marine Platz) about a 200-300m walk. It used to be the seat of the local government and is today only used for Munich council affairs. Unfortunately for us we were there on Christmas Eve and it was obviously closed - not sure if it is open to visitors at other times of the year, but we would have liked to have gone in to see it as it originally dates from the early 14th century. According to our walking tour guide, the arches below the building were introduced in the late 19th century for both foot and horse-and-carriage traffic due to the rapid expansion of the city.
