Alekos Fassianos was a renowned Greek painter known for his distinctive, original style. The building, which he constructed with his friend, architect Kyriakos Krokos, is now run by a foundation managed by his family. The museum, located on the ground floor and showcasing Fassianos’ works, opened to visitors in April 2023, a year after the artist's passing. Although it’s a small museum, the building’s remarkable architecture and the beautiful artworks make for a wonderful experience.
The upper floors of the building house Alekos Fassianos' residence and studio. This unique structure clearly reflects meticulous attention to detail in both its architecture and interior design. From the balcony to the inner courtyard, from the furniture to the various figures throughout the space, everything is distinctively crafted. We thoroughly enjoyed our visit.
We had the opportunity to visit both the house and the museum as part of Open House 2024. Before leaving the small museum, we wanted to purchase a souvenir from the museum shop, but we were shocked by the prices. The items were incredibly expensive, to the point of being absurd. When checking for this review, I noticed that some people mentioned a €10 ticket price for the museum. If that price is just for the museum, it’s quite high. If it includes the tour of the building as well, it’s a bit steep but...

Walking into the house - turned - museum you are greeted by the lovely staff that kindly gives you a brief introduction & the flyers for the museum. Make sure to quickly go through the texts of the flyers to get an idea for the time each piece was created and the happenings of Athens at these times (A. Fassianos was greatly inspired by modern greek life)
Throughout the museum you'll find some of the greatest creations by mr. Fassianos, but also small little art treasures that he would create in between the big pieces. MAKE SURE TO GO THROUGH THEM ALL! They give you such a treasure of information about the artist, his life (hobbies, activities etc.) and the way that art made it's way into every spectre of his life.
Downstairs you'll find a projection room with subtitled films about Fassianos and shots of 70s-80s-90s Athens. What a gold mine!

Read moreThe Fassianos Museum is one of Athens’ true gems, offering an intimate and vibrant perspective on Greek culture. In a city often viewed through an ancient lens—a history of historicization—this museum stands out as a celebration of contemporary Greek identity through the work of Alekos Fassianos.
Housed in the artist’s former home, the museum feels deeply personal, as though stepping into the world that shaped his vision. His bold colors, flowing lines, and signature aesthetic transform everyday Greek life into something mythic and timeless.
During my month in Athens, I visited twice, and each time was met with warmth and generosity from the museum staff. Their knowledge and passion for Fassianos’ work added depth to the experience, making it all the more meaningful.
For anyone visiting Athens, this is a must-see. Fassianos’ art pulses with the rhythm of modern Greece, proving that the city’s cultural legacy is not just its past but also...
