Nice little museum. I was travelling Athens on a budget, but this tiny museum was only €3 to enter, and I'm glad I invested my money into it. There is a rich collection of old items associated with school and the history of education in Greece, including uniforms, books, notebooks, writing utensils, and furniture. There are 3 levels, a small museum shop, and information panels in English. The courtyard is adorable and the museum is quite hidden from the tourist gaze - I discovered it completely accidentally. The most interesting part, personally, was the history of how education was used as a propaganda tool in the 20th century. I recommend making this museum a short stop on your Athens...
Read moreI came upon this museum by chance on the way to the Acropolis museum from Monastiraki and loved it! As we say in English it's small but perfectly formed - over three floors with a narrow staircase. There are displays of objects (including some terrifying textbooks) and classrooms set up with rows of desks and "forms" as they were called - I just about remember a few of them in my first secondary school in Britain. There's a brief account (in Greek and English) of the history of Greek education, including unexpectedly under the Metaxas dictatorship.
