Kornarou Square — Attraction in Municipality of Heraklion

A fair rating would be 3.5 stars but there's no such option.

The place is at a great location and the rooms that end with a 2 or 3 (e.g. 22, 23 on the second floor, 32,33 on the third, etc) are great, very comfortable, well organized, clean, and have good facilities (coffee maker, fridge, good running shower, etc). Avoid the other rooms as the building design in 2D is like a triangle and these other side rooms are way less spacious, with a way less ergonomic layout, not to mention way louder (especially the side with the rooms ending in "1" are out in the open right above a busy square). These rooms, although they have a way bigger balcony, are overall way below par compared to the 2s and 3s.

When it comes to service there is room for improvement.

For stays of 6 or 7 nights or longer, it makes sense they'd offer towel replacement or some extra toilet paper rolls, which they don't. And if you ask them you might get a yes/no or "I need to check with central office and let you know".

Especially when they are asking you to pay double the cleaning fee (because I asked to be moved after spending one night -of a 6-night stay- at the inconvenient, cramped, and loud "1") they should at least change towels every couple of days as there's no drying rack to hang them to dry plus the bathroom...

Η Πλατεία Κορνάρου πήρε το όνομα της από τον μεγάλο κρητικό καλλιτέχνη Βιτσέντζο Κορνάρο. Ο Βιτσέντζος Κορνάρος (1553-1613) ήταν ποιητής με καταγωγή από τη Σητεία, που μεγάλωσε στον Χάνδακα (Ηράκλειο).

Ο Κορνάρος είναι από τους κυριότερους εκπροσώπους της Κρητικής Αναγέννησης, και το γνωστότερο έργο του είναι ο «Ερωτόκριτος».

Πρόκειται για αφηγηματικό ποίημα ή έμμετρο μυθιστόρημα γραμμένο στο Κρητικό ιδίωμα, τη μητρική γλώσσα του ποιητή, που αποτελείται από χιλιάδες στίχους με θέμα τον έρωτα του Ερωτόκριτου με την Αρετούσα.

Το ποίημα αυτό, που μπορεί αν συγκριθεί με το "Ρωμαίος και Ιουλιέτα" των Λατίνων, παραμένει ζωντανό μέχρι και σήμερα στις καρδιές των Κρητικών και αποσπάσματά του απαγγέλλονται συχνά σε παρέες, αφού δεν υπάρχει κάποιος Κρητικός που να μην γνωρίζει έστω λίγους στίχους του.

Σήμερα την Πλατεία Κορνάρου κοσμούν ένα συντριβάνι και ένα γλυπτό: ο έφιππος Ερωτόκριτος αποχαιρετά την αγαπημένη του Αρετούσα.

Αν σας παραξενέψει το γεγονός ότι οι πρωταγωνιστές της σκηνής έχουν πολλά κεφάλια, η ερμηνεία του καλλιτέχνη είναι ότι με αυτό τον τρόπο απεικονίζεται η δραματικότητα και η κίνηση του...

Ah, der Kornarou Square – man könnte meinen, er habe sein ganzes Leben damit verbracht, Passanten ein Glas Wasser anzubieten, und nun bekomme er selbst keines mehr. Dort thront der venezianische Bembo-Brunnen, eine Steinlaube, die einst Wasser spendete und nun höchstens ein Dach für die Möwen darstellt . Daneben steht ein osmanischer Sebil, heute gemütlich umfunktioniert als Kaffeeeckchen – ein Kulturschachzug, könnte man sagen .

Umgeben von modernem Kram: Läden, Cafés und Touristen, die hier vorbeiziehen, als erwarteten sie ein Theater. Stattdessen bekommen sie stille Geschichte – und vielleicht einen guten griechischen Kaffee dazu. Kornarou ist kein Place to be; es ist eher ein Place to pause. Und das erzählt mehr als jedes...
