Located in a touristic and busy area but also people living there come. I saw a lot of home delivery drivers and heard Greek speaking people. The choice is high but we are classical gyros. The regular portion is gigantic. Don't get troubled by the mentions "mini" and "giant". The 2,90 "mini" is actually a regular portion. So prices are more than fair for the area. The open one fed my two kids for both lunch and dinner... The gyros is super tasty. Last year we enjoyed it a lot so we came back and the second impression confirmed the first. The meat is juicy and well grilled. The garniture is tasty and the pita bread as well. Very kid friendly and nice staff. Offered some watermelon and tsikoudia after lunch, good to have some fruits after all these fat foods. Last year we took a souvlaki skewer for the children and it was very good (also served with french fries if I remember well). It's still on menu so it's also a good option. For the rest I don't know. Open kitchen so no tricks... For fast eating for a cheap price in the central place this is one of the...
Read moreOkay, we migrated to Crete after falling in love with the people and the island almost a decade ago. Food wise? Well, there are very few places with a more delicious and healthy gastronomy. Everybody knows this. So, finding the "best" is not so easy, as you might imagine. Well, Hovoli is among the top food places in Crete, really. First, and foremost, the quality of their food is perfect, and every time. Second, only the very best restaurants understand that anything on their menu has to meet the guest's expectations, or, it should not be on the menu. Well, as an American, if a restaurant has a club sandwich on the menu, let's say, it has to meet expectations, right? However these guys do it, they manage a perfect tasting club sandwich every time, without the exact ingredients that would go into one in America. In other words, someone in the kitchen understands taste. This is how all their products are, french fries to souvlaki, whatever. Bravo guys, my son begs me to order from you every day. I would, but my wife will get angry if her food is left...
Read moreAfter reading the reviews we gave this place a shot. We loved the large portions, yummy flavor, and prices so much that we came back the next day for more. On our second visit we received bread with taziki and a tomato paste before our meals and raki and sweets at the end (we didn’t get this the first day). After finishing our meals we asked several times for our check before we received it. I knew what our bill should be and the server told me a price higher. I asked if we were charged for the bread or raki and he said no. I asked to see the bill and he wouldn’t let me see it and said I wouldn’t understand it anyway because it was in Greek. He held the bill tight to his chest and wouldn’t let me see it. I paid the bill anyway using the tip money I had set aside to make the difference. We’ve ran into several restaurants in Heraklion adding charges to the bill and beware; this is one of them. Very disappointing as we planned on visiting several more times over our extended stay but now will...
